From what I understand from talking to a respiratory therapist friend of mine, inserting a ventilator does require anesthesia, and you want to do some imaging before you decide to ventilate. Intubation can cause permanent damage to the vocal cords, and you want someone doing it who is experienced, it’s easy to screw up. A lot of people with chronic respiratory illnesses put explicit orders not to intubate in their medical directives.

Faking it:
A) Does not feed into his unearned strong man mythos that his campaign tries to perpetuate
and
B) Would require the participation and cooperation of hundreds of people, including hospital staff, lying for him without any fuckups or leaks.
On the contrary, I think he’s probably had it for some time and as long as he was asymptomatic, they just remained in complete denial.
