- Trump says racist stuff on a regular basis
- Trump invoked Pocahontas in a dismissive reference to Warrenās possible ancestry
- The reference was offensive
- The reaction from Trumpās audience (which he did nothing to quell) was unquestionably racist
But youāre still willing to go to bat for Trump that this particular statement was not racist?
Remember, folks: we like Trump because he speaks his mind! Except when the plain sense of what he says is grossly offensive, which is usually. In that case, we read whatever tea leaves we need to in order to feel good about what he āreally meant.ā

He was dismissing the significance, or possibly the existence, of Warrenās ancestry.
I donāt think Iām going āto bat for Trumpā when Iāve repeatedly called him a racist and said the Pocahontas nickname was a lie and unfair. Iām just saying that in this one specific instance I donāt think heās particularly guilty of the specific offence of racism.
And yes thereās a racial subtext to the āPocahontasā term, but itās much milder than what people are accusing him of.
