Trump on the UK: "They call it Great Britain. They used to call it England, different parts."

Also the main English football organisations are The Football Association, The Premier League and what used to be The Football League (which became the EFL in 2016).

He has said this about the UK and Great Britain several times. Why does he think it is of any relevance?

It’s like Theresa May saying “they call it the United States of America. Some call it ‘the US’ or ‘the USA’. Some people call it ‘the States’. They used to call it ‘America’. They even refer to it as ‘the Union’. I love it. Great country”

He goes on about these things because they have to explained to him and he thinks everyone else is stupider than he is. Also because he has nothing of substance to say.

In response to the map, just to complicate things further, the official name of “the Republic of Ireland” is actually Ireland and in the Good Friday Agreement the entire region was referred to as “these islands” as the Nationalist community in N.Ireland and the Irish Government will not accept the term “British Isles”. British people (mainly the English) also still use the outdated colonial term “the home nations”. Again Ireland does not like to be included in this.

“A truly international field; no Britons involved!”
– David Coleman, commenting on some sporting event or other

I find it a lot easier to take Trump when he’s in shtick mode if I imagine it’s Andrew Dice Clay speaking.

His tank has been filled enough. We know it. He is stupid.

Some typos just work.
He might well wonder off (mentally), while wandering off physically.

What makes you think he knows anything? Sure plenty of people have tried to educated him, but he’s an arrogant prick who thinks if he doesn’t already know it it’s not relevant. Exposure to education=/=education. I think believing him stupid is inaccurate, simplistic, and leads to people continually underestimating him, which is how he got to the White House. It’s possible he’s got extremely high social intelligence, he can masterfully read people and manipulate them.

Well if plenty of people have tried filling the tank and he still knows nothing, what’s the explanation? Maybe the car IS slow, or perhaps the tank is also full of holes. Either way, the car is still slow and Trumpty is stupid. I am not disagreeing with your point about ignorance and stupidity not being the same thing, but as you said yourself, plenty of people have tried filling the tank.

That’s simply because when the UK started printing stamps, there was no question about which country they came from, because they were invented and used in the UK first.

But the hutzpahof maintaining that to the current day!

Until this post, the diagram and Logolepsy’s YouTube link, I didn’t clearly understand the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain. I do now. But the President of the United States should know and should know very well considering the relationship between the United States and the British Isles. However what is more disappointing to me than Trump’s geographic ignorance in this case is the number of people who truly believe he is a stable genius.

To be fair to Trump, many English people appear to have great difficulty understanding that there are differences. Including many UK parliamentarians…

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump was one of the many people who still think Carlisle is in Scotland (it’s 7 miles south of the border).

Not that any US President has visited Carlisle in the last 100 years.

Eh. Come back and complain about that when the US starts using .co.us TLDs.

As a dumb American, I will admit that I’ve always had trouble understanding the distinction between all of these terms (though I will at least assert that I knew there was a difference, that they weren’t interchangeable).

That diagram, though, is incredibly helpful. I don’t know why that’s what it took, but now I can finally wrap my head around it. So someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but what I get out of this is:

  • “The British Isles” is a term for a collection of islands
  • “Great Britain” is the term for a specific one of those islands
  • “The United Kingdom” is an artificial construct, a term used to indicate a specific set of countries

Now what I need is another version of this graphic that also covers the definition of the European Union.

If you have trouble with the various parts of the Atlantic Archipelago, you’re really going to groan under the strain of this mess.

Well, hair product, obvi.

That’s… a lot to take in. I want to believe that there’s a better way to depict this, but after several minutes of staring into it like a magic eye picture, I have no idea how to improve it.

And then I get distracted because I feel strongly that “Eurozone” should have been a late-80’s dystopian sci-fi filck, probably starring Christopher Lambert.
