Trump pardons Joe Arpaio

Some articles I read have stated this is going to cause Az to potentially switch to Dem control. It will be interesting if all the polarization 45 does if it really does hurt the GOP in the long run in 2018 and 2020.

I don’t think that has as much to do with capitalism as it has to do with racism. There are marginalized peoples and exceptional people in every country, regardless of economic model. People who are “dirty foreigners” here, look down on other groups in their own homeland. i.e. Mexico and the South Americans/those of more direct native decent, China and the Tibetans, Mongols, and other ethnic minorities, etc etc.

Racism doesn’t require capitalism (viz. Soviet antisemitism), but capitalism certainly profits from racism, both in the way @gatto describes, and also because it hinders workers in the dominant racial/ethnic group from realising that their interests are closer aligned with the interests of workers in the despised group than with the interests of the boss class. Hence, Trump.

Certainly Capitalism profits from racism. But taking America as an example, no matter what economic model we used, given our level of racism, it is going to profit from racism. It will either take more form them, give less to them, or both.

Trump indicated he would pardon Arpaio at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday: “I won’t do it tonight because I don’t want to cause any controversy.”

“I’ll make a prediction,” Trump said, adding, “I think he’s going to be just fine.”

You’re missing something, though. He doesn't care: he doesn't care what you think or anyone thinks. He’s a malignant narcissist. He has virtually no moral or ethical boundaries. When he talked about being able to shoot someone in the street and get away with it, he was just barely being metaphorical.

After having been exposed to his callous, toxic personality for this long, It’s difficult to believe there is not a corpse or two that he’s responsible for in the concrete foundations of Trump Tower or in the sand traps of Mar-a-Lago golf club.

“anarcho”-capitalism doesn’t even work in theory.

Business owners inherently have more power than their workers, betraying the existence of a hierarchy, therefore they are not anarchist.

A lot of them fail to be truly libertarian for similar reasons. If you are allowed to fire someone for reasons not related to their ability to do the job then you have no legitimate claim to libertarianism.

the big caveat i would add is that some policies we can take would level the playing field.

for instance, public healthcare, public education, daycare, free college tution, public transportation. heck even renewables ( as dirty power tends to be built in racially and economically disadvantage communities. hello standing rock. )

these things don’t help the largely white, libertarian or republican investor class much. however, they can help marginalized communities a lot.

moreover, the fight against social safety net programs has always been motivated partially by capitalism and partially racism. ( it’s part of why “welfare queens” were a part of the republican lexicon in the 80.)

it’s my opinion that racism doesn’t come out of nowhere. it’s obvious where it came from in the us, but republican policy, neo-con late stage capitalist policy, encourages it. normalizes it. ( just like pardoning arpaio does. )

you reap what you sow basically.

by reducing the harms of capitalism we reduce the harms of racism and create a chance for something new to grow.

but, we can only do that with programs that explicitly put people before profit. we can’t get there with a purely capitalist society.

ie. if people really want to end racism, they have got to give up some piece of their libertarian (american?) dream.

Most of human history has been anarchist collectives…

Your examples of movies is why libertarianism is called the politics of a 15 year old suburban boy.

A pardon also is an admission of guilt, opening him up to thousands of civil lawsuits.

It sounds like a “no true Scotsman” argument when you disqualify growth, adjustment and evolving from being “change”. Or you were taking the piss out of your boss.

Adjusting, evolving, and growing is change. According to your own definition, people change.
