Trump promises "some form of punishment" for women who have abortions after it is banned

Let’s try this argument with gun control. “We fully support the right to own guns. We only want to punish anyone who manufactures or sells guns or ammunition.”

Or same-sex marriage. “We support same-sex marriage. We’ll only jail those who perform them.”

Honestly, I don’t think you can compare apples to oranges in this case - guns and marriage are not directly part of my body, where as my uterus is. Plus several others pointed out the way we deal with both prostitution and tattooing of children.

And I wasn’t defending the pro-life position (as it’s still rather anti-woman and anti-individual rights), but explicating it.

Sorry; that was aimed at Trump and Republicans, not you.

Oh, no worries… I misunderstood is all. But it did give me a chance to clarify myself, so thanks anyways!

I remember reading somewhere that if you look at the home addresses of women who get abortions (not where they get them, since most travel long distances and even cross state lines), the majority live in red states. We can’t criminally penalize women getting abortions because they’re likely to be from a Republican family. Better to criminalize the Commie-Pinko-Liberal-Death-Doctors, because they vote for Democrats. Two birds with one stone, and all that.

“There is evidence that within the U.S. strong disparities in religious belief versus acceptance of evolution are correlated with similarly varying rates of societal dysfunction, the strongly theistic, anti-evolution south and mid-west having markedly worse homicide, mortality, STD, youth pregnancy, marital and related problems than the northeast where societal conditions, secularization, and acceptance of evolution approach European norms.” (Aral and Holmes; Beeghley, Doyle, 2002)

When people say they like Trump because he isn’t “politically correct” they think he’s sticking it to “the left.” But he isn’t, he’s sticking it to the right-wing establishment who are the real enforcers of political correctness. I’m not politically correct when I say, “person with a developmental disability” instead of using a pejorative term, or use “she” to refer to a trans woman, I’m just correct. Trump isn’t politically correct, he’s just incorrect. It’s all those politicians who think the same way as Trump but know that saying it would make them unelectable in the general who are politically correct. Political correctness benefits extremist rightwingers by letting them believe they are the silent majority. If everyone walked around saying what they really think then no one on the Republican slate would have an chance.

As you’ve already discussed with others, it’s possible to ban without punishing those getting the service. But even if it entails a punishment for those that seek abortions, “some form of punishment” (in the rambling context presented) is a worrying phrase that makes me think he hasn’t thought through what this really means. It means women being put in prison. If he can’t say that out loud, maybe he should reconsider his position (which apparently he already did, I’m just spouting off about my reaction to what he said).
