There’s also the point that, had they been allowed to secede, the Confederates would not have stayed put.
They’d already openly declared their intention to conquer the Caribbean, and they probably wouldn’t have stopped expanding their empire of slavery until they reached the Straits of Magellan.
And then they would have turned back north.

Also, these kinds of things are not restricted to the south, or the backwoods, or the poor, or the religious, or the ignorant. These are systemic problems in all strata of global society.

Personally, I don’t think the CSA experiment would have been nearly that successful or lasted that long.
I could expand upon this, but that’s a discussion for another thread.
