It doesn’t really matter whether Derrick Evans resigns or is ejected from the WV Legislature – he’s going to spend the next twenty years in Federal prison.
As an American citizen – and a resident of the proud state of West Virginia – I’m honestly hoping it’s for the rest of his life.
Four people are dead due to this insurrection, and there damned well could have been many more.
Unless there is the harshest punishment for all those who participated, then the Constitutional rule of law in this nation… is dead as well.
I’m just referencing the outfit, and mocking it because of the circumstance.
Maybe his identity is “mountain man”, which I gather some people play out these days. But I suspect it’s a garbling of when there were Europeans in the West called Mountain Men.
That crowd at the Capitol seemed “hyper-American”.
That headline… I’ve been trying to get people to see that for years. Even still, there are people dismissing these guys and this whole event. These are radicalized extremists. That’s what they are. They are the biggest threat to our country right now and have been for a long time now.
WV refugee here. I hope you are right, but my relatives still in the Mountain State seem to think he is a hero and should run for Governor, or Pope, or Sainthood or some such. In a place where education is seen as a mark of shame (I know, not everyone holds those beliefs, but they are pretty widespread) I am not entirely sure how to address the problem. It is amazing to me that the same state that sees Matewan and Blair Mountain as practically sacred sites can support a union-busting, bossman-embracing party like the Republicans. Just don’t know…
There are state charges involved as well that don’t fall to presidential pardon. I believe planning a terrorist act like this (along with coordinated transportation and matching hoodies) is illegal in many states.
A number of state AG’s have promised to prosecute any of their citizens who participated in this. So yes, state charges may become a factor if Il Douche does try a blanket pardon.
Ugh. I really wish the fascists would get out of the metal scene. Most metal bands publicly denounced the attack yesterday, and there are a lot of memes making fun of this clown, but I hate discovering this stuff. Never was a big Iced Earth fan, but whenever I find out a band I like has fascist views I make it a point to never hype them and go out of my way to just bootleg everything from them to cut off their money supply.
It’s an unfortunate side effect of the Scandinavian origins of metal. Fascism and neo-Nazism are alive and well in the backwoods of Sweden. It was the seed of the modern rebirth of all this stuff, unfortunately.
I ask myself the same thing about why there are any Republican women. Why side with the people who want desperately to go back to the days when rape was a misdemeanor property offence and beating your wife was legal as long as the damage wasn’t permanent.
