Trump says shutdown may continue “a long time”

I dont think Schumer/Pelosi are the optimal leaders for the Democrats, but I’m annoyed by the continual backbiting from the Alt-Left. And, No, they aren’t going to get real health care by just “demanding” it; theres a creature called a “McConnell” that will strangle that idea in the crib.

It seems like the left wing is just as prone to the “Will to power” theory of politics as the right wing; ie. if you and your politicians really want something hard enough, they will get it.

It’s called winning and we can expect a lot more of that. The saddest thing is that his core supporters love him for it. As near as I can tell, his primary appeal is that he makes liberals despair.

Only if the media actually does its job and doesn’t both-sides this bullshit like they always do…

… oh well.

I feel like what they should do is present some legislation that provides something like $6 billion for border security – but earmarked specifically for ICE retraining, improved immigration facilities, and updated electronic equipment, with no physical wall allowed – to pigeonhole this as a dumb childlike demand for a useless wall rather than rejecting ‘border security’. And tie it into healthcare or DACA to buff them up.

They are now… after that remark!

I’ve read that many racists being hurt by Trump policies are ok with the hurt because hurting other races is more important than not being hurt oneself - so, yeah, what you said.

DACA was just a stopgap measure to begin with. If the Dems are even going to think about giving an inch on the border they should demand passage of the DREAM Act as part of the price.

My prediction, honestly:
In about a week, Trump will make an announcement along the lines of: “The country, and our hundreds of thousands of wonderful government employees, have suffered under this Democrat-created-Shutdown for TOO LONG! Today I will reopen the government for business as usual! I have $5 billion for the Wall and will build it!”

And we’ll find out that he pulled $5 billion out of things like healthcare, PBS, education, and public housing to do an end-run around Pelosi.

He was making noises about that previously, but stopped. I think someone explained to him that it’s Congress’ power to allocate the funds, and he can’t just shuffle it around like he’s used to doing.

Not that he won’t try, after losing a few more White House people who had the nerve to tell him things that he can’t do.

Wait. You think his promises mean something?
You think his followers care what he said?

That would be way too clever for Trump. The man’s a dolt.

Finding money to build his wall without the Dems? You’re probably right.

Pretending he never said things, lying, blaming other people, and claiming he’s WINNING? That’s his daily bread and butter. I seriously think he’ll end this shutdown by just randomly claiming victory and yelling I WIN a lot.

The latest wackiness: Trump’s new plan is to just leave the government shutdown in place indefinitely, “for years”, and to declare a national emergency to release funds to build the entire wall.

months or even years.

Naah. Perhaps for some. Small potatoes. Probably more feel sorry for liberals and their crushed idealism.

It’s about effectiveness. Explain how Trump could cause this much trouble given his loathsome nature if he wasn’t effective? Democrats and Republicans have had eons to fix things - and all we ever got was prattle. Sad that it took a narcissistic asshole like Trump to get us out of Syria, likely out of Nato, and force these festering trade and immigration issues to the fore. You think whiny Democrats or lizard Republicans could have done it?

For perhaps the first time in a long time, you really DO have someone in Washington who might listen to you at least a little bit.

So it isn’t impossible for Schumer to deliver votes in exchange for real health care. He doesn’t hafta kiss Trump’s ass (though I’m sure he’d enjoy it) - just do the trade. Its sad to watch just how weak the Democrats truly are here. Especially given that Schumer is a fellow New Yorker who could bribe Trump with pizza,

Trump could strangle McConnell within a week if he were motivated. You think he can’t find the votes he needs? McConnell heads a dying party soon to be reborn. He’s legacy. No one will fire him unless he slobbers on the customers - but he holds no authority. The old Republican party is dead. The Dems now face “former Dems”. They won’t like that …

Now if Trump had half a brain - he’d hire Obama as a roving troubleshooter instead of dissing him all the time. Obama has first hand knowledge of much of this stuff, and I’ll wager he’s been to the dentist many times to fix the damage from gritting his teeth. Obama is not Bush. He has expertise value. And he’s no longer shackled by the chains of presidency.

If you want to condemn Trump, condemn him for his inability to hire and hold quality people. That criticism is legit. Makes you wonder how he stayed in business.

A national emergency can do a whole lot of things, but I’m not sure that it can bypass Congress’ power to allocate funds.
