I was actually thinking of it as an audition for Trump, showing how Kobach can follow his leader’s playbook to make his name trend.

Understood, but it’s not really compulsory. I imagine the leeway granted varies from place to place, but where I grew up the Jehovah’s Witnesses were always given a free pass and didn’t have to say it. It’s against their religion.
Really, I think anyone could get out of it who wanted too.
