That said, I have zero belief you and I can have a remotely fruitful discussion about the contours of the Second Amendment – less so on an internet forum – so, in the interest of comity, I’ll decline to take the bait here.

I’ve been farting around on internet forums for close to 40 years. I find it makes for friendlier discussion to – where possible, when it can be done without being overwrought – to flag where one is coming from. Since my views tend to be a bit different than others here on a number of issues, I think it’s in the interest of a friendlier BoingBoing to provide a little bit of throat-clearing to avoid what I fear I’ve manifested here with you. I apologize if you have received my framing as any sort discourtesy to you.
Again, I do not wish to open the door to pointless discussion about what rights the Second Amendment was intended to protect – there is a yawning gap between us about whether it’s germane here – and so I refer, as they say in Parliament, “to the answer I gave some moments ago.”
