I think Rwanda had some issues with sovereignty in the treaty that the Tories want. I seem to recall some group of people in little Britain foaming at the mouth over sovereignty in the past and present. Who were they now?
Well technically they were all elected … by the constituents in their electorates. /s
To paraphrase some peasants from an anarcho-syndicalist commune in an historical film.
‘You don’t vote for Prime Ministers’
I think Rwanda’s issue was that our legal changes to enable deportation to Rwanda should not go against international human rights provisions. Ironic, eh?
I’m an ex Labour party member. Labour is a hostile place for LGBTQIA+ people and solidly pro-TER. They are barely better than ther Tories.
If Corbyn had treated Jewish people the way Starmer has treated trans people then he would not have lasted a month. But we are an acceptable target for wannabe Tory bastards, so it’s considered OK.
Yup. English Conservative Party are more racist than Labour but they are the ones who had racism scandals, because hating Muslims isn’t so much acceptable as it is official policy in most of the wealthy, white dominated, world.
In England daily hate on trans people is clicks gold dust for both parties.
Just a little info: It’s not just the far-righters that are touting this insane Rwanda idea. Here in DK the governing Social Democrats are trying the same thing. They seem to have decided that socialism should just be for white people (maybe they should change their name to National Socialists?).
I do wonder why it’s always Rwanda? Did they come up with this harebrained idea?
One of the few countries in Africa they have heard of. In the context of getting rid of people, permanently.
Seconding the request for more info. I’d heard about the Russians arresting people for holding blank signs during the early days of the Ukraine war, but not about any of this shit in the UK.
The Tories have brought in some pretty swingeing laws to prevent protests, which allow the Home Secretary and the police to define what constitutes an illegal protest and there is a maximum penalty of 10 years.
Recently some protesters were arrested within seconds after beginning their protest. Last year a King’s Council (top lawyer) was arrested for holding up a piece of paper as a protest against King Charles.
Another lot of republican protestors were arrested at the coronation even though they had spent 2 months co-operating with the police to ensure their protest was legal. Some innocent bystanders were also detained for being near the republicans. They just got swept up despite actually being royalists.
Another facet of the law is that as a defendant you’re not allowed to bring up things in your defence like you used to be able to about your motivation for your actions.
It’s not working 100%, though. One recent case saw the jury find the protestors innocent. However a woman was arrested for standing outside a court and explaining the principle of perverse juries. I can’t remember the US term – it’s when the jury votes according to their conscience rather than the plain facts of the law. Her action was accused of being perverting the course of justice even though she was literally explaining an aspect of how justice is supposed to work in the UK.
Things are getting pretty fascistic over here.
“Jury nullification”, I believe.
It’s always strange how, according to right-wingers, these immigrants seem to manage to both “take our jobs away” and at the same time live a life of leisure off the lavish benefits afforded them by the welfare system.
I’ve always felt a bit soiled wondering about the Tory practice of putting members of ethnic minorities into positions which allow them to pursue policies that harm ethnic minorities. If you read the text of a Braverman speech, parts of it could easily be from the lips of a member of the BNP. Is this what’s going on? Are the ERG telling Sunak that the only policy he can be trusted with is a racist one?
Not the ERG specifically but the same usual suspects. Ironic in that in their racist terms they put an end to ‘white’ immigration from the EU, and legal immigration from the rest of the world boomed.
No. DK saw UK govt had opened a door in Rwanda already, so followed them through it.
Latest insight (rumour) says the frog-eyed shite (yeah, ad hominem - the man is a shit and does look like a fucking frog) is tossing up whether to rejoin Reform as a candidate (he owns the company that is Reform I believe, him or Tice) - they are getting 11% of the vote IIRC in recent polls and by-elections - or joining the Tories and making a run at leader. A seat as a Tory would be worth a lot more to him than a seat as Reform leader, and Reform winning any seat is very moot. I know where my money would be with anyone else, but the man is a coward and has lost every UK election he has stood for (though he was an MEP) so may opt for a predictably losable seat, so no embarrassment.
Popcorn and tissues all round.
If the English Conservative Party let him run in a totally safe seat that would be a way for the extremists to fly a kite before committing though.
They have spent the last decade and a half trying to eat his lunch policy wise. The dancing around fascists by mainstream right wing parties always goes one way: they mainstream extremist fascist idea trying to get that 10% and instead turn it into 40+%
The Reform Party has committed to run candidates in every constituency at the next general election, but they had done that before the last one, and Farage cancelled most of them at the last minute, which was a factor in enabling Boris Johnson to win. So who knows what will happen?
It is a sad irony that several of the recent top level non-white Tories, like Priti Patel, Suella Braverman and now James Cleverly, wouldn’t be here if the policies they have championed had existed when their parents wanted to move to the UK.
I don’t understand the psychology of this.
I think it was commentator Alex Andreou who said that if this was a play, the last scene would involve the victor of this internal battle between Cleverly, Braverman, Patel, Badenoch and Sunak finally deporting their parents whilst weeping crocodile tears.
Postcolonial studies offers a lens to explore this. Remember every colonisation features collaborators.
