UK Political Thread, part the second

I think I get the general direction that she’s coming from, but if I’m even close to the mark, she has articulated herself howlingly badly on this (and not for the first time) and done herself no favours by trying to discuss a fairly technical, distinct understanding of racism without properly explaining what that is and how it differs from the commonly understood usage of the term (or made an argument for why that definition is necessary and correct) and she’s fouled up horribly with her conflation of current, modern experience of racism with reference to historical circumstances, in a way that is easily falsifiable. I find it very difficult to believe that she actually thinks the way this is being represented, although that may be my own bias.

Hmm, so, at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the whole population of the UK was supposed to get a “test alert” sent to their phones.

In my local, at 2.59, exactly one phone started blaring.

For weeks we’ve been hearing about the test alert, some of the dangers it might bring to women in particular who are trying to keep a secret phone somewhere hidden, and hints for those of us not in danger on how to disable said alert.

There must have been fifty people in the pub this afternoon - it’s not that busy every Sunday - yet only one phone gets the alert. This does smack of the same incompetence that the UK went through with “test and trace”. (or was it “track and trace”?)

Do you live in Bad Kingdom?

It certainly feels that way at times.

Aye, I’ve got a dual SIM phone, it went off twice, a couple of minutes apart. That’s my prediction for the next big tory corruption scandal, dodgy deals done with mobile providers to give their customers a head start on running for the fallout shelters.
Apparently anyone without 4G (still a significant chunk of people in rural areas) would’ve been screwed if that had been a real emergency alert too.

That would probably explain it. I think my phone is 3G, it’s certainly no later.

You might have hit on something here - all the young’uns are the ones with 4G, so what’s the betting the tories will send an alert a couple of hours before the next election and get all those pesky voting kids off the streets. /s

My phone didn’t go off either so I assume whatever terrible fate awaits will come as a brief and horrible surprise. 80s nostalgia, huh?

Besides, do we really want to get in a shelter built by the Tories?

“I’m not here to discuss my taxes, thank you very much.”

-some rich twat, probably.

Built by them or filled with them?

Yikes.

Made of them?

An ablative shield of pillocks.

Your phone would have to be really very old indeed to not support 4G now. We’re talking still uses the biggest kind of SIM card, no apps will work on it any more, runs out of space when you install one single app kind of old. It’s probably 10 years since a non-4G phone was released. But if you usually have a H or H+ signal (HSPDA, which was like 3.5G) then your phone isn’t connected to a 4G network.

It wouldn’t be very protective but you could feel good about them being scrubbed away in the disaster :+1:

Sufficient quantities of them might be though. We should experiment.

I understood most of that, to my credit. I had to look up the settings - it’s from 2016, android 6.0, and I have Wifi switched off at all times, so that may be it.

They forcibly transitioned everybody in the U.S. last year—I got a “free” 5G phone out of it :iphone:

Having WiFi switched off shouldn’t have that effect, but having mobile data switched off would

Whereas certain politicians may say this is a problem that solves itself.

Well this is why they run tests, to find out which phones get the alert, which don’t, and why. I assume there will be a follow up call to ask whether you go the alert. Well if competent folk were running the test there would be.

In the increasingky fascistic society that the UK is, people not getting alerts while others do feels horribly on message.
