The Torygraph ran a big thing yesterday from “lord” Froat that the conservatives faced electoral humiliation because they weren’t extremist right wing enough.

Maybe Sunak was trying to respond to that by not focusing on the anti Nazi past. Because we know what side the current conservatives would sympathise with.
