UK Political Thread, part the second

Despite a few good things they are mostly buried under a pile of draconian horse shit but it’ll pass with barely any opposition. How you go about judging “legal but harmful” content is an exercise left to the reader, the scope of this thing is so broad they’d effectively be walling off the UK internet if it wasn’t so easy to bypass with a VPN - until such time that those get banned. Giving such broad, sweeping powers to MPs to decide what is “legal but harmful” given the utterly corrupt government we have right now is frightening.

Tech policy and the government has always been disastrous and what Nadine Dorries doesn’t know about pretty much anything could fill several warehouses. She puts herself forward as a bastion of safe spaces online but her social media history says otherwise…

This will sail through parliament just like the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 did which is arguably worse but together they are some of the most regressive internet laws in any democracy. Here’s a thread covering what troubling things are included in this authoritarian’s wet dream…

I came across this article describing some transphobia that got shut down in the House of Lords, but the amendment that got shutdown was part of a far more worrying bill for people in the UK.

Baroness Nicholson proposed an amendment to the controversial Health and Care Bill, which aims to reorganise the NHS to make it more similar to a US health system. The bill passed through the House of Commons last year and is currently on its third reading in the House of Lords.

UK don’t, just don’t. You don’t want your healthcare system to be anything like the US.

here is more info on the bill:

UK government still either evil or incompetent at dealing with Ukrainian refugees.

The summary:

UK government insists that Ukrainian refugees need a visa before they can come here. Fails to provide any means of getting one.

Then, when popular outcry happens, they reluctantly agree to let UK citizens sponsor named individuals for visas, hoping that the UK public were not willing to follow up on this.

It turns out that the public are actually serious about this, and over 100,000 families sign up for the scheme, but they don’t know the details of refugees because why would you.

Then, the Scottish Government steps in and offers to sponsor refugees who don’t have a personal contact.

Now, the UK government is simply not processing the applications.

Safe To Be Me has been billed by the government as the UK’s first ever global LGBT+ conference, and is set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first official London Pride

However, after the government confirmed it would be proceeding with a ban on conversion therapy that does not protect trans people, 82 LGBT+ and HIV organisations are now refusing to be involved.

A Vice report last week revealed the conference has so far failed to attract corporate sponsors.

“We’re less than three months away, and we have no speakers, no sponsorship, no budget. It’s a mess,” one anonymous staff member told Vice World News.

I have come to the conclusion that government ownership is holding Channel 4 back from competing against streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon.

Uh huh. Have you indeed? Good for you.
She can’t even claim to be “pulling a Truss” as a blind squirrel occasionally finding a nut.

In a healthy political system a cheesemonger shouldn’t be given this kind of authority. Any chance of a judicial intervention?

He said he was “sorry we haven’t been able to reach agreement with the organisations concerned but that will in now way diminish our determination to tackle prejudice wherever we can.”

Johnson also argued that trans women should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports, which he believed was a “sensible” opinion. He also said that women there should be spaces in hospitals, prisons and changing rooms which were “dedicated to women”.

A big fuck off to this guy too.

Earlier on Wednesday health secretary Sajid Javid told Sky News that the government is “absolutely right” in banning conversion therapy “for LGB people”.

However, he added: “When it comes to trans, I do think that we need to be more careful.”

Doesn’t Cato take a fair whack of Russian oligarch money as well as American oligarchs?

Fuck you Nadine. I was about to start a subscription to All4 (their app which has their channels on it) to watch Derry Girls without ads next week. I mean the ads for most shows aren’t even that intrusive on the app, not like it’s YouTube or something which can be unwatchable, I just felt it was worth doing. Not now. Not when I know that something like that will never be made again if you have anything to do with it.
I mean, I’ll still watch Derry Girls but I fully expect the channel to slide down the toilet as the old commissioning dries up. Farewell Channel 4. I went to film school in your late night schedule.
