UK Political Thread, part the second

Obviously those things are designed to be opaque and all. I did get a giggle at this:

The Cato Institute has also received funding from traditionally left-leaning foundations and organizations, including the Gilder Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, Google, and Facebook. [89] [90]

Walmart is left leaning? I mean this is a bunch of tech-bros, scorched earth capitalists, and hedge fund dicks. Is that what passes for left leaning? I guess if you go with “The Cato Institute is aligned with right-of-center economic policy” rather than the more honest “the Cato Institute is a promoter of far-right extremism funded by oligarchs” the Walmart clan look left of centre to you?

Maybe it was some Hoover branded think tank I was thinking of?

I mean, the answer is probably that this Wikipedia entry was written by a Cato staffer who is not only trying to make it sound more balanced than it is but from whose perch on the Overton scale Walmart probably does appear left wing.

The socialists who run Walmart are supporters of food stamps and Medicare. /s

edit - that should be Medicaid, not Medicare

That’s from these people who, at first glance, I wouldn’t place as far right (unlike the Waltons, Koch’s, Facebook, and well google is liberal hard right. Maybe Arsebook could be called liberal hard right too).

Fuck that. I checked a bit further in their website: bunch of right wing bellends.

To be fair, the foundation is not the store. For example, they are heavy donors to environmental groups like the EDF and the Nature Conservancy, as well as to the NVF.

Well, that makes this news much less surprising:

And that Minister of Silly Walks?

(John Cleese has long been a Tory, no?)

Ostensibly a Lib Dem, I think. He used to do party political broadcasts for them.

I mentioned this before- his political opinions appear to have gone on the most boring and clichĂ©d arc possible. From a Human rights activist vaguely associated with the Labour party as a young man, he has steadily drifted rightward as he’s gotten older, going to being outspokenly centrist in middle age, before slipping into brexity harrumphing at the modern world from his retirement home in the Carribean in recent years.

Good. What about Scotland and Northern Ireland?

They were already working on their own conversion therapy bans that include trans people.

The Scottish Tories announced on Wednesday (6 April) that they will back a trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban if one is brought forward in Holyrood. The SNP/Green coalition has already promised to ban conversion therapy by the end of 2023.

Northern Ireland has also been working on its conversion therapy ban. A spokesperson for the Department for Communities (DfC) confirmed to PinkNews that legislation is currently being drafted and that the eventual ban will protect “everyone affected in our LGBTQI+ communities”.

Up until now, Wales was set to be governed by the same legislation promised by Westminster – however, ministers are now eager to explore alternative options to ensure that trans people in the territory are protected from harm.

Good! I was wondering about leaving the UK, though.

Also
does Ireland has a ban on conversion therapy? Looks like Sinn Fein was pushing for a ban prior to the pandemic

I was reading something about the same russian troll farms (and the russian propganda machine) being linked to brexit and the scottish referendum (this was back when the UK hadn’t brexited), which is the only time I’ve seen where Russian and Tory objectives didn’t align
 do you find it plausible?
