I’m not surprised, being very familiar with the area (Carlisle is geographically North West England, but culturally North East). Things have been bad since at least the early 80s, and probably before (decline in shipbuilding and coal mining).
Some good news
So the contest to see which evil right-winger is up next is under way, with eight confirmed contestants, four of which you might have heard of.
In other news, there’s not even going to be a motion of no confidence in the government, because the government has decided that it won’t get on the agenda.
Things like this are the reason why I am convinced that the UK must never be allowed back into the EU without a written constitution.
I might have to pick up the next issue just to read the spluttering “This time you’ve gone too far, I am cancelling my subscription” letters.
