I’m not surprised, being very familiar with the area (Carlisle is geographically North West England, but culturally North East). Things have been bad since at least the early 80s, and probably before (decline in shipbuilding and coal mining).

In other news, there’s not even going to be a motion of no confidence in the government, because the government has decided that it won’t get on the agenda.

I used to subscribe but then they turned so blatantly biased against/pro [insert current hot-button topic] that I had to cancel my subscription.

No, seriously, I did have a subscription for years but cancelled it a while back for reasons completely unrelated to the quality or content of the publication.
