The author describes 4 degrees of toleration: permission, coexistence, respect and esteem.
I guess I’d describe those as ranging from
“Let’s not start a war over this"
to
"I admire your dedication, but it’s not for me.”
(I think it’s important not to rank those degrees in terms of moral acceptability, but it is important to know that different degrees exist.)
