Yes. After 2016, I fully expected that Trumpers would act like this, but the pandemic is destroying my faith in humanity all over again by showing that the average person on the street, regardless of politics, is more than happy to potentially murder random strangers and/or their grandparents. Nobody can be trusted, not ever again.
I think what’s happening is that these folks deep down understand that they should be wearing a mask, but for some reason (laziness, selfishness, conspiratorial beliefs, etc.) they choose not to. When they seen someone who is wearing a mask, they are reminded of their own failure to act responsibly (subconsciously, perhaps). But they are incapable of reflecting inward, so they lash out at the perceived accusation. It seems to me very much how toddlers sometimes refuse to do as they are told.
I am well over 50, and people from middle school still make fun of me for using the word “panoramic” in 7th-grade English class one day. My own dad didn’t stop making fun of my pursuit of a PhD until he died.
So it’s really great that people not only enjoyed my use of “cathect” but also had fun with it and said thanks to me for using it. Your responses made me happy. Thank you.
The way you’ve put this reminded me of how many people harass vegetarians/vegans in this same way. Seems like a guilty conscience making them uncomfortable.
