Next, let’s get rid of qualified immunity!
The cops who call in ‘sick’ over this are the exact cops that should not be on the force. Any ‘good’ cop will see that justice has been done to one of those ‘bad apples’ we always hear about, and come into work as per normal. The cops who get the tantrum flu over the verdict can stay home from the job. Hopefully forever. And maybe we can replace them with some social workers, and community programs that can actually benefit comunities rather than have so many ‘enforcers’ and ‘dirty harrys’ on the street terrorizing comunities and making everything worse.
Perhaps he could start his own gang. He could call it the All-Cop Aryan Brotherhood (ACAB).
And, where is the death penalty?
I am not proposing this as a solution. But if you don’t execute someone who in a position of authority publicly murders someone for no reason other than they wanted to; and has shown no remorse or sign of changing his attitude, how can you execute someone else?
Not even an option. It was abolished in the state of Minnesota in 1911.
I disagree. I don’t think being quiet is the right strategy ever. It’s OUR country, not just the racists, nationalists, and white Christian dominionists that Trump represents. I’m tired of the rest of us having to walk on egg shells around them and still having outcomes like George Floyd’s.
They do that no matter what already.
Because in many places, cops aren’t necessarily well-paid for being brutal assholes?
Especially since the BLM protests demonstrably worked. The only reason why that POS was ever put on trial and why he was convicted is because people demonstrated for months without tiring.
Considering the overwhelming amount of evidence, and that he would not testify on his own behalf, I thought “if ever we could expect a guilty verdict, this is the time.” But this being the USA, I was fully prepared for something besides a guilty verdict, deadlock or not guilty. Almost hard to believe guilty on all counts.
I hate to say “good” because there is still very little good that comes out of this. I still expect cops to kill minorities, and others, without pause or recourse. I doubt police forces have learned anything. For all I know police unions are just going to take revenge by telling their members to deliberately be slow responding to calls, or pull other similar tactics.
We’ve spent decades building this problem through taxpayer-funded militarization of the police, harsher laws, building more prisons, and lax oversight. It’s going to take a long time to correct it.
Well, if we want to blame politicians, one look at the graph shows us who to blame; Unfortunately, Reagan’s already dead, and I’m banned from necromancy except in 4 states and three countries.
(I.E., I’m not allowed to bring Reagan back from the dead to answer for his crimes.)
While this is wonderful news (and frankly, better than expected), I’m not celebrating.
I will save that for if/when he is actually sentenced to prison, preferably for life; anything less than 20 years would be a travesty… and giving him probation will be lighting a fuse.
This is the best take. The idea that meeting expectations should be cause for celebration is just nuts. This is how it should work. The fact that it is unusual for the system to work properly is a damning fact.
