He did. Because it turns out being president isn’t all about rallies and enjoying your power and telling people what to do and having them do it. It has limits to what it can do and at least potential accountability…I think he was worried about more than actually came about…for failing its responsibilities.
But I bet he’d love to be president if those were taken away, which is the other thing his whole movement just so happens to be about.
Even when he was running for president, he never wanted to be president. He wanted to be a by-divine-right absolute monarch, with Richelieu actually running everything for him.
And he almost got it, except that every grifter in the palace White House had a different idea who the Richelieu was, and they spent more time fighting each other than in managing the shouty idiot with the microphone.
Don’t get me wrong, just the collateral from all their infighting was plenty bad, and what they managed to achieve from their various manifestos was worse, but just imagine how bad it could be if somebody competent was running that shitshow.
Totally agree, both of them should be out. There’s a reality of cognitive decline that none of us can escape entirely. Really would be better not to have candidates in their 80s. Reagan had obvious cognitive problems in his second term. So does Biden. So does Trump. It doesn’t mean they can’t function in life, but they can’t function the way I think a president should function.
I don’t think that cognitive decline is destiny once a person reaches a certain age. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was as sharp as could be until the day she died (peace be with her), and Bernie Sanders is still going strong intellectually. You are talking about probabilities, not certainties.
Was she really? The pictures of her in her last year she looked really out of it, almost sleeping in some cases. Justices have the luxury that everything they need to do is in writing and most of the actual writing is done by clerks. I’m not saying justices are passive or uninvolved, obviously, but it’s a lot different from the demands on a president. Bernie, I’ll give you that, he seems to be doing better than most others in his age range. Even so, the decline can set in sharply at that age, from what I’ve seen. Come on, a country of 300 million and we can’t find some viable leaders under 80?
That would require a constitutional amendment. Not really in the cards, and tinged with ageism and sexism as several candidates 65 and older last primary were and remain quite vigorous and formidable. I’m looking at you, Elizabeth Warren. And, of course many younger people can have mental declines- expect more and earlier after COVID.
And of course, women live longer and haven’t been given the same opportunities to move up the leadership hierarchy.
In a better world, someone like Chomsky would be president. He’s in his 90s now, and I just heard him interviewed last week. Sure, a little slower than he used to be in his speaking, but no cognitive decline detectable at all in what he was saying.
IOW, it really depends on the person, but also, medical advances mean older people ain’t as “old” as they used to be.
