"I call this dance “Anticipation’!”
Animals are so pure, love this. That’s such a beautiful dog and he seems like a very good boy indeed That happy dance is totally the same thing i do when i order some takeout from one of my favorite places.
Are you a cop? Because if you’re a cop you have to tell us.
Brutus Patutus… that name alone deserves praise
The dog’s jumping around looks aggressive. It’s like he’s counting coup on his “prey” – symbolically attacking it, of course with great joy – to partially signify that this is his yummy treat!
I’m betting I’m not the only person who read that and squealed “Brootie Patootie!”
But “farm collie” specifically refers to a pure bred collie bred to another breed or mixed breed dog to improve it’s working quality. It’s why it’s a farm collie, rather than just a farm dog.
And there are a number of similar deliberate mixes of pure breeds with mutts and other breeds. Some of the most common hunting types in Europe are bred by specifically cross breeding greyhounds or deerhounds, pure bred ones. With other breeds or existing mixes.
Basically your outbreeding the hillbilly grade inbred pure breed show dogs to restore their working qualities. And it often becomes the basis for restorative breeding programs and push back on oire breeds.
Breed standards are a disaster. The “type” classifications offer a way out of it.
My little dog gets this happy whenever I give him a greenie (a little dental-chew treat, if you’re not a dog person). In addition to the initial jumpy dance, he typically carries it from room to room, making happy noises to himself. He’ll even nap next to it. Sometimes he carries it around like a treasure for up to a whole day before he gives in and eats it.
If only my dogs showed that much restraint. They basically plop their butts down wherever they are and scarf the thing down.
Sounds like what the neighbors’ pitties and Goldens do whenever I stop by with a bag of bones from when I’ve made beef ribs in the slow cooker. “The Bone Lady’s here! The Bone Lady’s here!!! I’ve been a really good pup!!” #Happydance
Thanks. I needed that.
I’m always pretty happy when presented bits of crunchy pig to eat myself.
How can anything be delightful or funny about a living creature that has had parts of it cut off for aesthetic reasons?
One of my dogs (a greyhound-retriever mix, we think) will literally lick the mouths of the other two when they get a treat, trying to get it back out. Once, she jumped over the elderly beagle to steal her medication, thankfully only a pain pill! She’s so rude but we love her to pieces.
Off topic, since it’s your area of expertise - I have a greyhound retriever mix but have been told that she should be called a Lurcher. Is that a breed, a general term like “heeler” and “pit bull”, or…?
Nope, that’s the opposite of aggression. That’s the play bow, a signal that the dog is having fun and wants the pig’s ear to have fun too. Or, more likely, he wants the person who gave it to him to join in the fun. “Try to steal it, and I’ll pretend to be protecting it! Come on, come on, come on!” Whenever I see videos of dogs doing the play bow, I want to go get a dog so damned bad. But I travel too much to make it practical or kind to adopt a puppy.
Maybe it’s a rescue. Or would you just rather it was put down?
That’s a “logical” step you took, not I.
My point was about a cultural aesthetic that should be considered shameful, not the life of that individual.
Your “point” was a bit of moral grandstanding. Yes, one should not do this to dogs’ ears. But we can recognize that and at the same time enjoy the dog’s obvious joy.
