I mean, even in “red” areas, what people have found (and by people I mean the Schoharie County Democratic Committee, of which I was a member) was that there are a lot of reachable people who simply have never been approached by anyone in the last 20 years because the partisan split is 60/40 (more like 65/35 out in the hills). By approaching them and presenting a case not seen on Fox news or at their local diner, we sometimes found people who were only GOP by habit and by association.
We were still doomed to lose almost everything in that county for a while - much like Abrams in Georgia is finally getting payback for probably a decade or more of difficult organizing - but we shaved off some of the loss in the area so that Democrats could win our congressional district (this was for Delgado, who’s now running for lieutenant gov).

We did flip a Congressional seat in 2018… that had been Republican for 20 something years. That felt like time well spent. We turned what had been a 70/30 deficit in the county into 55/45, so we still “lost” but since our district had 7 counties we got it close enough that the 2nd home zone of NYC could carry it… 52/48. We’ve got what, a 6 seat majority right now? So to the extent that Dems have not fucked everything up since Biden got elected, we definitely played a part in making whatever they actually got done possible.
