I just tried saying it with my tongue touching the back of my teeth, and it definitely sounds more authentically German that way (at least to me, based on my recent binge-watch of Dark ).
Nonsense! If people of Dinesh d’Souza’s social background pronounce Thailand in a novel manner, that’s important linguistic information that needs to be collected. Linguists rely on ordinary people-- some with very faulty memories, to construct a picture of local dialects.

Way more accurate than my experience. My German teacher hadn’t been to Germany since just after WW2, and my best efforts sounded suspiciously like a Bond villain.
… which might also explain my interest in Russian… huh…
In any case, even if d’Souza and Vasundhara both grew up pronouncing Thai and thigh the same, it was a quirk of their local dialect and not, as d’Souza claims, a mark of cosmopolitan sophistication.
For me, Vasundhara was a trained observer of linguistic phenomenon, trying to figure out if d’Souza was relaying any information besides “As a loyal party member, 2 + 2 =5”.
