But shouldn’t that be "stand as far away from the edge as the trench is deep? Because your height is not correlated with size of the chunk that might fall off and possibly take you with it.

I suppose working around ditches that are rarely deeper than I am tall has given me a bit of a blind spot. Your take makes more sense.
