You know, the rise of Trump and so much of the idiocy in our era really can probably be explained by some people not smoothly making the transition to this truly postmodern era. Thus, man who emerges from TV to lead us to destiny confuses many into submission.
My hope is that we’re in an adjustment period, and in another decade or two we’ve developed more societal antibodies to combat hyper-mediated bullshit. Of course like Covid, the immuno-response might be what gets us…

On a different note, how much of the outrage in culture is driven by people who simply aren’t educated enough to understand the conversation?
I know there’s a whole class of crass, cynical opportunists who generate outrage for profit and power, but I’m increasingly realizing how genuinely ignorant much of the nation is. They’re angry because they don’t understand.

It’s increasingly clear that “Q” is just Satanic Panic Part Deux: The Re-Stupiding.
(I spent years being thankful the satanic panic was behind us, shaking my head at how crazy it was, that in the late 20th century the US had a literal witch hunt. Now here we are, with something far, far crazier being adopted by mainstream Republican party candidates.)
The fundamental problem is that some people have no ability to critically think (because they were trained to not do that), and we cannot distinguish television from reality, because television is our reality. The conventional wisdom is that only people with serious mental health problems can’t distinguish between a tv character and the actor who plays them, but even that’s not true, it turns out. We all accept, without realizing it, the reality of what we see on levels we don’t think about. But people lacking any critical thinking skills conflate fiction with reality more often, and in more dangerous ways. (And even those who are critical thinkers, who are aware of the fictional nature of what they’re watching, that just means we continuously fight against what we know isn’t true because our worldviews were still constructed, in part, out of these bits of fiction.)
These people couldn’t handle modernism, either. But anything that requires some analysis and understanding of how culture works leaves them totally lost. They don’t have the intellectual toolkit for it - it’s been deliberately denied them.
Even worse, the education they’ve had was to “educate” them to not understand the conversation. For people who accuse the left of being snowflakes so much, right-wing education is premised on avoiding a lot of facts and ideas in education. (E.g. Texas Republicans putting their opposition to “critical thinking” in their very political platform. It’s why home schooling is so popular on the right - not because they want their kids to get a richer education than they would get at a school, but because they want to make sure they get a more impoverished one.) The right’s whole thing about how college students get “brainwashed” into being leftists is because the right’s whole system of education is about trying to prevent students from thinking about things, to be unaware of so many aspects of culture, so they don’t challenge orthodoxy; ironically finally getting a real education makes it clear you’ve been fed bullshit up until that point, which makes you even more likely to reject that orthodoxy. The end result is adults who spent their education being carefully taught to not think.

- Is anyone hiring untrained spies? Surely there’s a market for discounted spy services and I’m available.

given the current climate of fanaticism including violent direct action associated with this ‘Qanon’ ecosystem’s take on the dire state of the global power balance…this video is at worst obviously satanic and at best really fucking irresponsible. all these stupid rationalizations for it being satire, or cultural commentary, or in some way OK for an audience mature enough to regard it as harmless make evident said audience’s idiocy.
