These are what they should have used in The Killer Shrews.
I first encountered one, labeled a “Chinese Water Deer”, at the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now, I think, named the San Diego Safari Park). Part of the San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park had an enclosure that, I seem to recall, might have been an aviary. Don’t know. Don’t remember. Don’t care. The point is that the entrance was a large “airlock” arrangement, with a closed gate to the outside, a closed gate to the inside, and quite a large enclosure in between with running water, exotic plants, and…Chinese Water Deer. Without warning, I was greeted by the cutest deerlike thing I’d ever seen, sporting what looked like huge vampire fangs. I was, and remain to this day, completely boggled.
