I was going to add “She’s not my First Lady” to my bumper sticker wish list but it made me sound like a slut.
Hillary Clinton was singled out very early during the Clinton/Bush election. Part of that was due to her very public presence in her husband’s role as Governor of Arkansas, as well as her own professional career. Another element was that this was the period where the GOP started to go full ape-shit with their attacks. Newt Gingrich was pretty much the architect for this shift (and later the dumbing down of support staff) and even older members of the GOP (like Bob Dole) weren’t comfortable with the shift from political attacks to calling folks “anti-Christ” just to get attention.
Unfortunately, this approach seemed to work. My own mother, who on multiple occasions justified only having two kids a decade apart by saying that she “had her own life to live” and wasn’t “a baby factory”, would sound like Phyllis Schlafly when Hillary’s “baking cookies” comment was mentioned.
Sigh… This escalated quick.

I have only one objection to Melania Trump, and it’s her husband. For all we know she’ll do a Michelle Obama. The world she was in is a rather fluid one in which assigning a particular status to a particular woman is perhaps rather pointless, and the issue to focus on is that her husband seems to be fine with that world. But we have no idea what she felt about it at the time.
We already know her speeches will be good.
