Yes, and the plural of anecdote isn’t data. If they’re your experiences, fine. If not, then stop saying things like:
I expected as much, which is why you didn’t really get the AIDS reference above. You came of age in a world where AIDS already existed, which is completely different than being a sexually active adult and watching this mysterious STD pop up out of nowhere and start killing people. It’s an understatement to say that’s a chilling effect.
That means something different than you probably think it means. Women became more liberated, and non monogamous, non heterosexual lifestyles became more visible, and sex outside of marriage became more accepted. Two related things happened here. First, researchers really started studying human sexual behavior in earnest, and were publishing these studies. Suddenly, they shed light on what was considered normal, which is that there is no normal. Previously, all of these things were on the down low, which is not at all to say they weren’t happening.
Secondly, the power dynamics shifted from men controlling mostly everything about sex to women playing a more equal role. This is more about equality than promiscuity.
So no, the sexual revolution wasn’t all about people suddenly wanting to have more sex. It was about equality and openness with regard to sex and accepting human sexuality as a wide and highly variable spectrum. It also didn’t happen all at once, but it started in the 1910s with first wave feminism and publicly available birth control and continued through the 1940s with landmark studies of human sexuality.
I was not at Woodstock, so I can’t say that it was or wasn’t mostly about sex. I would like to think of it as a major cultural touchstone, albeit one with plenty of sex and drugs. Basically:
- Woodstock wasn’t Spring Break
- Not everyone who was alive in the 60s went to Woodstock
- Not everyone who was in college went on Spring Break
No, I’m saying the opposite. I’m saying the AIDS crisis had an effect, and if we could adapt to that, we can adapt to the coronavirus outbreak.
