It’s machined, though it’s a custom extrusion to start. Probably bead blasted? Seems that the real magic is in the hinge, but really, it’s still too damn much.
But it actually sells for $999… not $1000.
Surely, that psychological pricing strategy will mind-fuck the masses and snarf them in by the millions!
What’s particularly odd in this case is that using the vendor’s stand is generally considered kind of a downmarket move: yes, there’s a difference between the $80 monitors with zero adjustment and the decent stuff that has some height and tilt and so on; but among people who care it quickly goes into ergotron arms and standing desks and stuff.
It wouldn’t at all surprise me if the superstructure suspending someone’s l33t video editing monitor array over their desktop and input devices is well north of $1k; but it won’t be the monitor vendor’s little stalk; it will be some arrangement that consumes zero desk space and has pistons for ‘weightless’ monitor adjustment and exhaustive cable management and such.
That market I can understand; but trying to sell a $1000 OEM default stand seems like it would require a special sort of customer(especially when the VESA mount and a fairly lavish arm would actually save you money).
Apple have blocked that video, so that should neatly end the discussion about it.
Next time, why not try a Summit from IBM?
Not enough people, apparently. The most expensive Apple Watch sold today is the 1500 Hermes.
people are missing the point. this is obviously a tactical monitor stand.
Courage…
Surprise!

And still another bad mouse: the one on the AT&T 5620 terminal. UIUC had a bunch of those things hooked up to some of their 3B2s back in the mid-1980s, and while the terminal was damn cool for its day, the mouse was horrid, with a tiny metal ball that easily got dirty. No optical mice back then!
slightly different though. Actually…not slightly…TOTALLY different. A watch can be a utilitarian tool, but most often is a stylized piece of jewelry. It is a decoration or adornment on one’s person. For the fancy folks in the world, spending $100k on a rolex that tells the time in the exact same manner a $15 casio from Target does…is rather normative. You or I would most likely agree it is a waste of money, but for that person the value was in its exclusivity and aesthetics…akin to a gold bracelet, or diamond ring, etc.
In this case, its a monitor stand. Its PURE function. No one EVER has walked in a room and said “Woah…check out that monitor stand!!! OMG that’s amazing…I have to get me one of those!”
In fact it amazes me how far Apple has fallen from a design standpoint and how their lead the pack mentality around minimalism is truly gone now. While all the desktop PC case designers are moving to tempered glass designs to show off components and using RGB for style while not compromising function; Apple’s last 3 Mac Pro designs were: A cheese Grater, a TRash Can, and now a trash can cheese grater combo.
I would almost agree with you except at least when you put your hand down on that mouse you know it is oriented right and not at a weird angle because the mouse is a circle.
I just wanna say I’ve been using the same 20 inch apple cinema display for like 10 years now. (I plug my laptop into and use it as a desktop). The color and resolution have held up perfectly for all that time. I work coloring comics and ned my color to be accurate and it is. No need to constantly upgrade a thing that works perfectly. I think you can actually find this same model used for like 50 bucks online.
edit: just looked it up. my display came out in 2004. It’s older that I thought. 15 years and still working great.
Yeah, I use my tried and true 27" 2010 iMac as a monitor for my work laptop and for my desktop gaming PC. Works perfectly and is just about 10 years old now.
The thing that really flies in the face here is that its a metal stand. How in god’s name does a plain stand cost as mush as the iPhone?! its clearly bullshit on Apple’s part.
all these expressions of thriftiness may impart a feeling of thriftiness among the hoi polloi, but this is a machine built around bleeding edge requirements.
The base iMac Pro was a capable machine when it came out. Now, the speced out imac gives it a run for its money. The base Mac Pro is a poor value in comparison-- but if you need more memory than the imac pro (256 GB), or more than 18 cores, or more than a Vega 64, it’s the only deal in town.
It’s kind of like buying a top of the line camera body without the very expensive lens that will make the camera useful. There’s no point in investing in 3d motion tracking tech if the inexpensive lens doesn’t focus quickly enough for it to make a difference.
This display is meant to be an extremely accurate monitor for editing 4K HDR. If you don’t need to edit 4K HDR–or have less exacting colorimetric requirements, and most people don’t, there are better options.
We can have both.
Note no one is complaining about the cost of the monitor. Just the stand. We can appreciate the cost/value/features of the new Mac Pro and the new monitors and ALSO say “$999 for the metal stand is fucking ridiculous”
This is not take it all or nothing.
Explain how a 1000 dollar apple stand outperforms a 200 dollar ergotron arm.
the magic mouse really makes a run for the money tho.
no right button, except there is but only if you touch in just exactly the right spot.
no scroll wheel, except there is but only if you tentatively hold the mouse and contort your wrist to gently swipe the mouse just not so hard you move the mouse.
no middle button, but you can press cmd or alt or option or something, except it only works in some applications and no one knows why.
oh! and to be clever they reversed scroll directions with an option to put it back to what every other system in the world does so that basically no one can guess what happens when you sit down at a mac machine.
i tried it for a week then got a wired mouse that actually works. note: i wanted to use my existing logitech wireless but i had to download drivers - drivers!!! - and they didn’t work anyway because they were built for a previous version of the os.
apple is good at what again?
Selling apple to people who already want apple
