I keep telling people that Derry Girls is the funniest show on television anywhere now.

ETA We finally got around to watching RRR and boy howdy, it is as fabulous and fabulously entertaining as everyone says. And the history is fascinating, the artistic liberties notwithstanding. It definitely got me in the mood for Diwali today.

I have become just straight-up addicted to “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” since I found out that it’s available on Disney+ in Japan. It’s one of those shows that I only recently became aware of, but had been jonesing to watch just because of the sheer volume of memes that it generates.

When I saw this trailer at first I was thinking it was a big joke about a non-existent show, but apparently they actually did make this special, and I’m not sure how I feel about it:

Marvel has done plenty of silly self-parody and mocking of genres lately but this almost feels like they’re taking it too far, like making a big SNL skit using their own characters rather that letting someone else make the parody. But then again, maybe it will be great. Better than taking themselves too seriously, I guess.

Same here.

As was I. Not disappointed at all. Most of the big changes I (think) I noticed are things that made better TV.
It’s action packed. Which his stuff should be. It’s exciting adventure story stuff which has the added layer of interrogating the modern world via technology.

Some of the reviews I’ve seen from critics complained about the slow pace, but it must have been a balancing act to try and explain the general concept to anyone who hasn’t read the book and is expecting another Star Wars.

I have a feeling that large parts of the book may have to be jettisoned to fit the story into eight episodes or so while keeping the action parts, unless another season is already planned. Anyway, it’s nice to see intelligent science fiction.

Hunting lionfish with a submarine is the most ridiculous video game ever :joystick:

Slow, slow, quick, quick, slow.

I mean it’s got full on video game combat bookending the episodes. Ninja meat puppet battles etc. it’s way more violent than stuff I would normally watch. But then if that kind of stuff goes on too long my eyes glaze over and my attention wanders and I’m thinking they could profitably replace the extended sequences with some intertitles saying “loud noises, explosions, violence, and gratuitous gore” and stop dragging the story down and get on with things instead of incessant empty crash bang flash splat.

Ever wonder how movies have crept up to three boring hours length recently? It’s not the slow pace, the long deliberate builds, the amount of drama. It’s the need to put CGI dollars on screen.

This definitely has gaps in between the spectacle, the story. Those complaining about the slow pace probably aren’t interested in the story at all. Which is fine I suppose but there is no shortage of fine entertainment for them.

Guillermo del Toro becomes showrunner and occasional writer/director in a collection of stories from other creators. Something like a contemporary version of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Many recognizable stars, and two episodes in, some great SFX.

Also, two episodes in… I’m loving it…
