Thank you. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Only one episode up so I guess they are doing a slow and steady release.
HBO Max is weird.
I dvr’ed it last night. Planned on watching it tonight, but there’s an afternoon/evening flex alert for the next three days. It may have to wait until Thursday.
Those guys never shut up.
I’m so pissed at how difficult HBO Max is to watch.
Thankfully, Lovecraft Country is available on the old HBO apps as well as max. So I was able to watch LC easily on Roku.
begin rant
But the other day I wanted to watch My Neighbor Totoro which is only on Max. I could watch on my phone but I wanted a big screen. I tried to get it to play on the web since I have a way to project the web to the Roku. But the web loaded the app on my phone when I hit play. I read it was available on xbox but it wasn’t on the 360 (I don’t have the newest system). I then read it was on the Apple tv. I had one in storage, dug it out and got it running, but no Max channel. Then I read it had been taken away from apple TV. I tried a few other things and then realized I could project from the iPhone app to the apple TV. The really nutty thing is that I have free subscriptions from multiple sources, it’s the hardware support that sucks.
end rant
I almost added that if not bitching about this it would be something else. Fucking broflakes never stop complaining.
HBO is part of my internet/cable package, but I still stream the shows I want to watch from other sources; that’s just how much of a pain in the ass ‘HBO Max’ is.
From what I read they don’t want to share any of the profits with the various platforms. So while I have had a paid account for the month+ that Max has been out, this weekend was the first watching the service due to the whole exclude the hardware platforms BS.
Probably a good place to acknowledge that people, a lot of people, are struggling to keep a roof over their head and food on the table and HBO Max access is the most inconsequential thing for me to rant about considering the state of the world right now. Sorry.
I mean, this is the light “Whatcha Watchin?” thread; it’s not like you’re complaining about this in a BLM or Corona discussion.
It’s certainly a (formerly) First World Problem, for sure; but IMO it’s appropriate enough to fuss about how crappy HBO Max is here, if nowhere else…
Great points. I just suddenly felt like maybe I was being a Karen about this and we already have enough of them online and IRL.
We just started this last week. My partner did a trial subscription to Starz to watch a movie, and afterwards I noticed American Gods in their lineup. I told her that I knew nothing about the book or the show, but that I was quite certain we’d both love it. Whadaya know, I was quite right.
Complaining about annoying but trivial shit in general does not make one a Karen.
There needs to be an attitude of unearned entitlement and superiority, usually along with a hefty dose of racism…
That person can’t answer you, as they are long banned.
However as someone who gave American Gods too many chances, I’d suggest keeping your expectations low and just enjoy the good bits.
Damn. Thanks for the warning, though.
I loved Season 1. I heard some negative things about season 2 and so haven’t bothered to resub for the new season. Let us know what you think when you get to season 2.
Ok. Good to check my calibration occasionally.
'Tis only my personal opinion; you might really enjoy it.
RE: Lovecraft County;
I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot and was completely engaged during the entire episode.
Thus far, the casting/acting is good, the cinematography is impressive, and the narrative is intriguing - setting Lovecraftian horror against the backdrop of Jim Crow and the need for Green Book Guides, while also acknowledging that Lovecraft himself was a racist.
The symbolic imagery is on point as well, like scene that subtly shows a billboard for Aunt Jemima syrup juxtaposed with the flagrant, glaring hostility of White townsfolk as the Black protagonists drive by uneasily.
I’m very interested to see where this series goes.
I loved it, both seasons. But I’ve also loved the book. I do wonder whether it even makes a lot of sense if you haven’t read the book or whether the plot is just confusing.
I was super impressed by Lovecraft Country as well and I want to see where it goes but having not read the book I was surprised how quickly it dives into the horror. The horror of the fictional kind anyway because up until that point there are scenes that leave you so on edge that the arrival of horrors beyond spacetime come as something of a relief. It was my understanding that the book does not explore this aspect as thoroughly as it should so I hope the series tackles it and the evidence appears to show that. Letitia is also fierce.
I think the fast pacing was a smart choice; otherwise it’s just more gratuitous torture porn with a focus on racism, and there’s already quite enough of that shite out there already.
I am totally here for “My name is not girl; my name is Letitia fuckin’ Lewis!”
Total badass.
I meant to highlight this in your post but it really is! It looks incredible and i had to immediately rewatch that montage bit with the James Baldwin sample while being shown Norman Rockwell style scenes of segregation and unemployment.
That was a deeply powerful scene, as was the one with the slow race against sundown.
