Whatcha Watchin'?

It was pretty good that. Even if the title half-had me expecting a cameo from Rey
Looking forward to Jenna Colemanā€™s replacements too.

Iā€™ve read a book which purported to contain all of his stories. This was many years ago, so they all kind of blur together for me, alas. ā€œCasting the Runesā€ often gets very high praise, as I recall. This may of course be due to its ace adaptation as Night of the Demon.

We liked it, but the main actressā€™s attempt at an American accent made my ears bleed.

I enjoyed it, but I felt like it avoided the chance to be smarter. The final battle between Strange and the Big Bad was pretty clever, but overall it felt like a lot of missed opportunity. On the other hand, Iā€™ll watch anything with Cumberbatch in it.

I feel like Marvel is hit or miss with its movies. A couple of really good ones, a lot of okay ones, and a few cringe-worthy ones (and Deadpool, which was the best superhero movie ever). Theyā€™re consistently better on the small screen, IMHO. Iā€™m worried Agents of SHIELD has jumped the shark with the Ghost Rider stuff, but the Netflix series are excellent with a few minor quibbles (ninjas on Daredevil, pacing on Jessica Jones and Luke Cage). I canā€™t wait for Iron Fist.

Of course compared to the post-Nolan DC crapfest, Marvel movies donā€™t have a lot of competition to keep them honest. The MCU is starting to feel assembly lineā€¦too many cooks in the kitchen and too many characters competing for screen time to allow smart plots and any actual character interaction/development. I guess if you like 20 minute CGI superhero fights, it delivers, but those are the parts I usually fast-forward through.

Recently Iā€™ve been watching World Without End before it evaporates from Netflix. Not as good as Pillars of the Earth, which while still an adaptation of of the book, was much truer to the spirit of the novel than the sequel.

Thinking I might re-watch the Ip Man movies next. Or maybe give Marco Polo season 2 a shot. The first season started strong and quickly lost steam. Sometimes I get the impression that Netflix is throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks, and the studios doing the actual production are trying to fill screen time with too little story material because apparently Netflix likes 50 minute episode obligations. Anyone notice how long their title sequences (which admittedly are above average) are by todayā€™s standards? I mean they released 126 original series this year alone. I literally get offered another Netflix original every time I log in. And maybe 20 or 30 are watchable. #FirstWorldProblems

When I was about 10 years old, our school library for some reason had a book of his ghost stories. Scared the living shit out of me. I should reread them, just to see what effect they would have now.

Brooker is sounding dejected even for him.

Ohhhhā€¦ it was all a dream, thank fuck for that. I usually find that the most egregious of plot resolution but iā€™ll take it.

Lol

I just finished The Man in the High Castle, seasons one and two over the course of a couple weeks. Incredibly great, well-acted, well-written, a fully-fleshed-out world. Wow! Iā€™m not totally clear how former members of the U.S. Army ended up so highly placed in the Reich, but I could overlook that. Iā€™m also a little sad because the end of season two felt like a true ending, as in there may not be more.

What did you think?

I thought the first season was okay. Iā€™m not sure itā€™s something that needs to be this drawn out. Iā€™ve watched a couple of the new one but my heart isnā€™t really in it. I guess Iā€™ll plod through it.

Isnā€™t there a new Sherlock today? I hope itā€™s not overwritten crap like that last ones have been.

Iā€™ve had several things disappear from Hulu mid-watch, most recently the entire Criterion collection, but I just tried Stargate Atlantis and it still seems to be there.

That would not appear to be a good trade.

I canā€™t argue with that.

I was going to drop Hulu because of the Criterion loss, but Iā€™ve started watching the old Dick Cavett shows (really rewatching, but I donā€™t remember them that well from 40 years ago!), and they are so wonderful that I think Iā€™ll stick with it until Iā€™m through them.
