Why does everyone hate U2?

Rock n’ Roll is here to stay, but rock n’ rollers pass away

whoa de la soul backed by the roots I can’t even you have seen such things and I bow to you sir or madam

You re-quoted him wrong, so it made no sense at all. Skimmed the article, still makes no sense, but I know what he meant now.

Ever since Apple spurted that U2 ejaculation into everyone’s sound hole, I’ve been praying to Gawd that someone will hack Apple’s iTunes servers and inject a rancid GG Allin album into everyone’s iTunes music collections worldwide.

I read an article about them in Rolling Stone that labeled them “the next Beatles” so I went to see them in NY for their first U.S. appearance in 1980. They were cool, but not the next Beatles. Years later, I saw their Zoo TV tour and found Bono a bit pretentious and glib when he decided to call the White House to speak with President Bush (41). Even though I’m no jingoist, I thought, who is this Irish rock star to come hear and dump on my country?

Exactly. Much like “The Simpsons”, they’ve just been around too long and whatever attraction they had is lost. I still like “Joshua Tree” though.

Energetic young rock band makes it big, then get old and lame. News at 11.

I’m just annoyed that now I have to consciously avoid jumping from 3 to 14 when counting in Spanish. When I first heard that I thought, he’s probably trying to be funny but just sounds like an idiot.

Plus what everyone else said.

Seriously loved War though.

I’ve been skimming through this thread and not really getting it.

Was this a US only thing? The U2 album, still hyped to high levels by Apple, wasn’t auto-downloaded to any of my devices (in the UK.)

Still free, but I would have had to go and download it, if I wanted to, just like any other track or album.

I never explicitly downloaded it and my music player on my iOS devices kept trying to include the songs as streaming in random mixes of mine.

Well, that is a bit rubbish.

I’m wondering if my habit of keeping one or two OS revisions behind on OSX/iOS prevented that happening to me.

When people say this, I always wonder which one of the Boomtown Rats’ 11 top-30 singles they’re referring to…

Huh. I’ve only ever heard I Don’t Like Mondays. Guess the rest were less memorable?

They actually had some pretty good tunes - Someone’s Looking At You is absolutely fantastic.

Well, this may go some way towards explaining why a lot of Irish people have no time for Bono/U2 - while Ireland went through a horrendous time financially, U2 avoided paying tax here. Because tax is for the little people, dontcha know. http://www.finfacts.ie/irishfinancenews/article_1026589.shtml

Perfect summation of celebrity activism (often)… Is that by Winston Rowntree? Cause I love his stuff. Subnormality is a fantastic comic.

I think that was the only American hit, but I think they did much better in the UK. Also, I think he wrote that at my college’s radio station…

I’m a Norwegian living in Scotland. I listen to BBC radio a lot. If they ever play Boomtown Rats it’s I Don’t Love Mondays.

Never even Rat Trap?

I meant back in the 70s and 80s… I think maybe I don’t like mondays was their biggest hit overall (in part because it hit big here)? But I’d imagine back in the day they (especially John Peel) played lots of their stuff. I find modern radio mediates things from the very strangely, in an odd nostalgic kind of way.

Also, OT, but have I ever told you I love your avatar?
