Why you definitely want to be on Star Trek: The Cruise IV

I can only tell you what they told us.

They did a nice setup for it in DS9. (But I wonder if they first tried to retcon the Klingons with CGI?)

Fair enough. I still have a hard time imagining that the network was totally fine with the appearance of Orions and Andorians and Tellarites and Talosians and Gorn and Horta and Salt Vampires and whatnot but balked at the idea of giving some bad guys a few forehead appliqués.

The general pattern for alien species in the Original Series seemed to be “if the makeup department has to do more than two of these guys in the same episode then they aren’t getting anything fancier than facepaint and a wig.”

I’d personally always assumed that since they knew they were going to be recurring villains and ”on par with humans” that they chose a simple, easy to replicate look.

Coincidentally also qualities that correspond with “affordable.”

They had a lot of troubles trying to jeep the Green Girl Green.

Funny green factoid:

That’s all cool to know (and some of what I suspected). I just wonder if they’re going to address the differences in show (like they did with TOS and later Klingons) or just roll with it.

And I thought that the actors were great, BTW, especially Chieffo. I loved what she brought to the roll and the story itself… But I really do love the look of TNG/DS9 era Klingons… some of that is what I grew up with, though!

They did, but Enterprise did a full explanation of why TOS Klingons looked different, and it’s considered canon. It involved genetic manipulation from the Eugenics wars that got out of control:

So there is an explanation. I get what @orenwolf is saying about how much better make up and prosthetic are, and wanting to maintain the vision of truly alien people (from our perspective), and wonder if they’re going to offer an explanation for the differences between Discovery and TNG Klingons… if not, that’s cool, but I’d love to see some sort of in canon reason to explain it away, personally. I also realize I might not get that. Won’t stop me from watching it, though.

The DS9 setup was nice in that it admitted that there was an actual “in game” difference between TOS and NG Klingons.

Until then, there were all the treksplanations like that “1960s television wasn’t advanced enough to show Klingons properly”, or “What difference? Klingons have always looked this way.”

“But we don’t talk about it.” means that they were going to talk about it.
