IIRC there were actually a few people running against him, but had more or less zero traction.
But at the same time, i can’t remember an incumbent debating a party opposer in the primaries. Who did Obama run against in 2012 on the Democrat side?

A cursory google showed that it was a similar situation, with a couple of folks on the ballot but no heavy players. I guess I always assumed the incumbent had to fight for reelection within their own party, but it turns out, that’s not true.
