Because we keep not learning from the past is how… The only people to even remotely “solve” the issue of nationalism in the Balkans was Tito, and he was able to keep the peace by offering an actual alternative identity tied to a decent life… of course, the economic problems of the socialist economy undid that and Tito kept giving ground to nationalists by giving more power to the regional communist parties, but for a while there, there was a majority of buy in to the concept of a Yugoslav identity. But the west (and post Soviet Russia) insisted upon the ethnic national identity instead.
The US, EU, and UN did a shit job of stitching the place back together after the wars.
I mean… have you seen us lately? Clearly, some of us don’t when it’s not in our economic interest to do so.
