Turnout nearly 75 percent

Some 74.9 percent of Finnish citizens resident in Finland voted this time out, compared with 69.9 percent in the first election round six years ago, when voters sent Sauli Niinistö back to office for a second presidential term.

A total of 1,882,670 people headed to polling stations during early voting, representing 44.5 percent of the electorate residing in Finland.

The closure is certain to raise questions about media plurality in The Philippines. The country is one of the most dangerous in the world for journalists and where successive governments have directly or indirectly interfered in press and media, including the targeting of Nobel Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa and ABS-CBN, a critic of former president Rodrigo Duterte, being stripped of its broadcast licenses in 2020.

The Reporters Without Borders non-government organization ranked The Philippines as the 132nd most free country in the world, but said also, “The Philippine media are extremely vibrant despite the government’s targeted attacks and constant harassment, since 2016, of journalists and media outlets that are too critical.”

The ground was icy as my partner, my son and I made our way to the center of Berlin two Sundays ago. Still, as we joined about 100,000 others who had gathered there to protest right-wing extremism, it felt cozy — both in a literal and in a metaphorical sense. The mass of human bodies created a microclimate that made it bearable to be outside in the frosty Berlin dark for a couple of hours. And it was also warming to see this many people turn out to defend our democracy.

The number of people transferring from the reserve to civilian service has increased significantly since Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) said he would seek legal means to prevent people from leaving the Defence Forces reserve.
