CIA chief told Bolsonaro government not to mess with Brazil election

Would the leaders of the U.S. empire really be happy to see Lula win?

Lula has also been proposing a unified currency like the Euro to wean the region off its dependence on the dollar. Wasn’t that kind of regional assertion of independence considered a major “crime” of Gaddafi by western leaders? And am i wrong in remembering that Saddam Hussein proposed similar regional independence, also thereby provoking US and western anger?

If Lula does win, maybe it won’t be long before the US declares him a dictator and works to topple him from power. After all, when it comes to staunchly leftist leaders in other countries (not that Hussein and Gaddafi were that), the US has had no qualms in the past about trying to overthrow many of them.

I like Lula, but I really disagree with him on Zelensky.

One interesting thing about Lula is that the press criticizes anything he says. He has declared himself in favor of the right to abortion, against Zelensky and so on. The press spends days discussing these lines and many pundits comment that this “verbal radicalism” will end up making people vote for Bolsonaro.

Do you know if “the press” there is corporate and profit driven, as in the US?

Dan Healey, a professor of modern Russian history at the University of Oxford’s St Antony’s College, said homophobia in Russia is often used as a political device — and “I’m Not Gay” fits neatly into the Kremlin’s narrative of Russia’s cultural superiority.

“It’s part of a wider strategy to wage culture wars to distract people from more serious matters,” Healey told Insider in an interview. “But also to confirm something about Russia — that it’s different from Europe and the West, and that it has its own values and belief system.”

Russian media experts previously told Insider that much of Russian propaganda relies on striking a comparison with Western nations — it commonly portrays Russia as morally superior, in contrast with the supposed debauchery and excess of Western nations.

This is not a uniquely russian problem oh no. I also want to point out what Pete Buttigieg said at a recent event about how conservatives use ‘culture wars’ to distract the public about the fact that they don’t have solid ideas lately with dealing with internal issues too

I mean, that’s some of it, but I do also believe that THEY believe that the existence of the LGBQT+ community, non-white people, free women, non-Christians, etc, is a threat to them and their way of life. It’s not just being used as a political “hammer”, but it part of their world view, because they fundamentally believe in the extremist white evangelical worldview.

The reporting still seems rather disingenuous…

The victory is a milestone for Sinn Fein, which has long been linked to the Irish Republican Army, a paramilitary group that used bombs and bullets to try to take Northern Ireland out of U.K. rule during decades of violence involving Irish republican militants, Protestant Loyalist paramilitaries and the U.K. army and police.

What were the UK using? Squirt guns? :man_shrugging:

This result demonstrates the total failure of Unionism as an ideology. “Sinn Féin electoral victory” is the exact sentence that the existence of Northern Ireland was supposed to prevent.

Now, the mature, sensible thing for the various unionist parties to do in this situation would be to go out and try to rebuild trust in them with the electorate- to demonstrate that they can deliver for the people of the north of Ireland. So naturally, that’s not going to happen. I expect that they’ll collapse the assembly before it even manages to sit, by refusing to nominate a DFM, which will inevitably lead to another election as they continue to circle the plughole of political and historical relevance.

Agreed. But all too often, the blame for ALL the violence is placed squarely on the IRA and Sinn Fein and the role of the Protestant paramilitary groups, the protestant dominated police force up to the introduction of British troops in the late 60s, and then British military is downplayed as merely reactionary. This is certainly not to dismiss the violence the IRA carried out against civilians, because it was terrible, but if people in the government REALLY cared about holding murderers accountable for their actions, they sure as shit would not have backed away from court cases about that…

DUP walked out of peace negotiations in the late 90s and would apparently prefer to return to the days of Catholics and Protestants blowing each other up rather than both sides realizing that whether NI is in the UK or the Republic, everyone should have equal rights and representation in their government. But what can you expect from Paislyite extremists who have no interest in solving problems, but would rather cling to power based on a divide and conquer strategy. I’m guessing that the reason why Sinn Fein won was because this extremist party continues to dominate Unionist politics and offer nothing of value for the average voter, whatever their faith and political views on where NI belongs.

The speeches of Lula and Geraldo Alckmin, his vice president and former political enemy/opponent, were praised for cohesion, sobriety and balance. Even the most critical voices in the press recognized the professionalism of this campaign event.

I have the impression that everyone was waiting for Lula to make another faux pas. According to the newspapers, even Bolsonaro is worried that if Lula keep talking carefully, his campaign team won’t have material to attack the candidate.
