Those in favor of Lula said that he was successful in attacking the alleged priest. Those who are bolsonaristas are saying that Lula was rude and that if he is elected he will persecute Christians like they say the president of Nicaragua is doing.
In the end, the priest was Bolsonaro’s sidekick. He was just there to create confusion and generate memes and videos to be spread on apps like Whatsapp and Telegram.
The warning signs are flashing red: Democracy is under threat. Across Europe and North America, candidates are more authoritarian, party systems are more volatile, and citizens are more hostile to the norms and institutions of liberal democracy.
These trends have prompted a major debate between those who view political discontent as economic, cultural or generational in origin. But all of these explanations share one basic assumption: The threat is coming from the political extremes.
On the right, ethno-nationalists and libertarians are accused of supporting fascist politics; on the left, campus radicals and the so-called antifa movement are accused of betraying liberal principles. Across the board, the assumption is that radical views go hand in hand with support for authoritarianism, while moderation suggests a more committed approach to the democratic process.
Is it true?
Maybe not. My research suggests that across Europe and North America, centrists are the least supportive of democracy, the least committed to its institutions and the most supportive of authoritarianism.
And I thought the secessionist wars of the 1990s were complicated. The Bosnian government, according to this article, is much more complicated. From what I’ve read, it’s very difficult to manage the country that way.
Do you think this triumvirate system is enough to guarantee the country some stability? Will we soon see yet another movement calling for independence for Serbs?
I thought the political situation here was confusing. But reading these two articles, I feel it could be a lot worse.
Yet it was easier for them to set that up rather than get at the heart of the problems that beset the country in the first place. It was a huge weakness of Dayton…
And Croats, too. Croatia has seen a real rise in far fight politics (like many other places in Europe, sadly).
There are still only 4% of sections counted, so it is too soon to make any inference.
But, among the votes for president, there are only around 3.5 % of votes not casted to any candidate, much lower than the previous elections (around 9 %).
The states that support bolsonaro counted the votes earlier, but from the start the difference has been getting smaller, and lula should surpass him soon.
Soon, the counting from bolsonaro states should finish, and then lula’s growth will be faster.
Now with 66.6 % counted, bolsonaro has only 100k more votes, and probably from the next update, lula should take the first place.
Mr. Lula took the lead, but there will be another round in October 30th, the last Sunday of the month. Mr. Bolsonaro is happy, because all the polls proved wrong and the difference in the number of votes between the two candidates was very small.
All the pundits here are saying that the great winner in this election was the right. A lot of so called conservative congress men, senators and governors were elected today. The specialists are saying that the conservative/reactionary wave that swept the nation in 2018 was repeated this year.
If Mr. Lula gets elected, He will have a hard time trying to administer this country. A lot of Bolsonaristas were elected and they probably will do hard opposition against him.
The result of today’s election showed that Bolsonaro’s campaign was wrong. In recent days he has been presenting himself as “moderate”, “polite” and even humble, trying to capture votes from minorities and women. Now He’s going to get even more radicalized. I bet he will speak more and more barbarities, to scare voters and please his base, which must be satisfied, like fans of some football team.
A lot of former members of the Bolsonaro government were elected. Mr. Bolsonaro knew how to get in touch with the masses.
I believe that this year is the year of the consolidation of the right and the extreme right.
Other big losers were opinion polls. All the big companies got their predictions wrong. This will tarnish their reputation and fuel conspiracy theories that are pervasive on apps like Whatsapp and Telegram.
I don´t think so. The election was clean and peaceful.
IMHO What happened is that many people support Bolsonaro, but many more people hate Lula, fear Communism and believe that the best way to change the country is to keep everything as it is, but with authoritarianism. That is, not everyone likes Bolsonaro, but many people believe that he is better than others in achieving their desires.
What really perplexed me was that former members of the government were elected, even people who have become disaffected with Mr. Bolsonaro, ended up being elected, riding the anti-Lula wave.
