Yesterday I watched the comments Trump made to the press while standing next to Zelensky before their meeting. He barely mentioned the war at all; his comments were all about his polls regarding the election and how he had a good relationship with Zelensky because the latter didn’t say he did anything wrong during the “impeachment hoax.”
Trump is incapable of even pretending to care about people or causes except in terms of how they relate to his own personal interests.

Zelenskyy looks like a hostage when he’s next to Trump.
He actually looks relieved when he’s next to Harris.
Trump couldn’t even answer the fucking question he was asked about if Ukraine should cede territory to Russia to end the war. He just gave a non-answer.

Zelensky is no idiot, and he’s clearly going to be paying careful attention to US politics - he damn well knows that Trump is Putin’s pawn and if he gets elected, he’ll sell out Ukraine in a heartbeat.

While it would suck, I bet Zelensky could kiss his ass and tell him how great he is and get Trump on his side. He is such a narcissist.
The other thing that crossed my mind: Oh god, what if Trump start emulating either Zelensky who wears olive drab fatigues, or despot dictators who dress up in military regalia. He already has am affinity to strong men. And if he sees how much respect Zelensky commands as a war time president…

If Trump wins, I wouldn’t blame Zelensky for trying the flattery approach to Trump.
But I’m not sure it would help. Putin clearly has something devastating on Trump. I don’t think it’s sex-related, since he knows his cult members eat that stuff up – though it might be Epstein related. Might be debt. But whatever it is, it’s something even Trump knows would turn the cult against him.

Trump can probably work on some corrupt real estate deals with Putin that he couldn’t easily with democracies. But beyond that he’s made it clear that he admires fascists, believes in doing everything by force, doesn’t appreciate courage, and doesn’t trust Jews – which Zelenskyy, who he derides as a “great salesman” in the sense of scammer, just happens to be. Like Mindy says, that’s more than enough to explain his attitude here. Trump wants a world where bullies always win.

I don’t disagree with you and Mindysan that Trump loves him some authoritarians and fascists … but I cannot get that two-hour private meeting Trump had with Putin in Helsinki early in his term out of my mind. Just the two of them and their respective translators. Unlike much of the other norm- and law-breaking things Trump has done, that incident seems to have been memory-holed. I even googled it a few weeks ago after I mentioned it to someone and they had no idea what I was talking about. Had I dreamed it? Misremembered it? No – yes, it happened. Not only did they meet then privately, they’ve done so several times. No one knows what they talk about.
What is said in these meetings? Why are there no witnesses? Why no record of what was said? I maintain that Putin has Trump by the balls, one way or another.

Could be, but that’s pretty weak evidence. Anything could have been said there, including collusion about a future invasion of Ukraine. Fascists flock together, so Trump could just be aligning with those who share his world view and interests… Unless there is other evidence of Blackmail to consider, I think that this is just the occam’s razor here, that their interests align.

Why not both? In any event, if I were running Harris’s campaign I would make this a major talking point: “Why won’t Donald Trump tell us what goes on in his private meetings with one of our country’s biggest existential adversaries?” Even if it is just two despots polishing each other’s knobs, it needs to be a bigger scandal than it is.
