Perhaps escaping the possibility of having to vote on invoking the 25th.
A lovely sendoff by Warren: “Betsy DeVos has never done her job to help America’s students. It doesn’t surprise me one bit that she’d rather quit than do her job to help invoke the 25th Amendment,” Warren wrote. “Good riddance, Betsy. You were the worst Secretary of Education ever.”
WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned her position tonight:
I call it “Insurrection Day”. Mark your calendars. And I believe there is no way Donald J. Trump resigns. As long as he stays in power in the US he will do everything he can to burn it down around him before he departs. It’s right there in the Fascists Handbook. He keeps a copy by his bed.
Even in leaving her job, she uses children. Using them only comes as a shielding excuse of a coward from her, as she actively sought to fuck over every child nationally on student loan laws.
I hope she crawls back into her swamp hole and suffocates from the cold weight of her own indifference.
If I could believe that Donnie can read, I’d believe that.
But seriously, that the Mango One is some kind of wannabe Mussolini is not the main problem. The frightening fact is, there’s oodles of USians who are now so mentally impaired, that they’ll believe absolutely anything. You will of course find such people in any other country, but the sheer quantity in the USA is something else, as well as the degree of separation from reality. Normally, wannabe fascists are there for the prospective of power and profit, nothing more than politically-flavored grifters. But these! It’s gone far beyond sectarian fanaticism, and well into mental illness. I’d love to hear an opinion from mental-health professionals on such specimens.
Yes, and even if it’s a retroactive impeachment and conviction. Or happens at the stroke of noon on the 20th. I don’t care how they do it. Get it done. Cut this cancer out of our lives forever. For the love of democracy, please do it.
…puts on striped shirt so I can make fun arm gestures.
"After further review, the call stands. Sedition, defense, number 45. 10 day penalty. Treason, defense, number 45. 4 day penalty. Unsportsmanlike conduct, defense, anyone wearing a red hat or carrying a confederate flag in the capitol building. 5-10 year penalty and felon status.
As they point out, he was A-OK with the chaos and violence, until finally he made a half-hearted video calling them “special people” and asking them to go home, while still complaining the election was stolen from him.
Besides, resigning would be the honorable thing to do, so obviously it’s off the table.
Conor Lamb was dead on, but part of the WaPo writeup bummed me out:
It’s important to understand this as a breakdown of relations among citizens . In a forthcoming essay, the Niskanen Center’s Brink Lindsey will argue that a restoration of “democratic civic virtue” is in order after Trump.
This has one principle as its hallmark: “Treat all your fellow citizens, regardless of their political views, as your civic and political equals.“
More vague platitudes about respecting the political views of your fellow man are not what is needed here. Right-wingers long ago weaponized this olive branch that has been repeatedly extended to them by DEMANDING that their wildest, most brazenly false conspiracies be taken as seriously as basic truths. Accountability for people in power willfully and cynically misleading and inciting people is what is needed.
