Yellowstone has a webcam on top of the Old Faithful Inn, that usually is focused on Old Faithful when it erupts. The rest of the time it scans around at the panorama of geysers and other scenic things. Often you can see bison trotting through the geyser basin doing bison things. Earlier this week, I saw a bison ambling down one of the walkways to a stand of trees. On the other side of the trees, several park visitors were approaching from the other side…

So this would be a fluke of natural selection that has generated a benefit in maintaining variability of behavior that might end a particular line of genes but overall keep the species alive.
