Youtube musician Pogo explains why he calls his channel "Faggotron."

“If you had actual context outside of his music. You would know instantly he isn’t homophobic. He has in the past also used his words to stir the pot of hypocrisy from other groups. Effectively being provocative to show people actual points.”

Ah - he very effectively showed the hypocrisy of gays for wanting to be treated with respect and provocatively showed his homophobia by denigrating them to sell a product.

Uh - well done? Excellent self own?

I would rather he didn’t try.

I thought jokes were supposed to be funny.

In case you missed the original video before it was taken down as hate speech, here’s a mirror of it, so we can all have a laugh.

Ah yes, when I want to make a hilarious, non-homophobic joke to share with my friends, I immediately consider “cheering for the death of all gay people” as my first option.

Naming oneself or one’s channel after a slur that denigrates the people one hates seems… fucktarded.

Never heard of this guy, looking forward to never hearing about him again.

The sad thing is that I was a big fan of his music when he first appeared, and friends of mine have given hundreds of dollars to his kickstarters in the past; he was doing some really interesting, innovative stuff that is utterly not what you’d expect from a MAGA-yelling bigot, like doing field recordings of Bhutan and remixing the voices of the people into a song celebrating their culture.

I have no sympathy for people who dehumanize others to distract themselves from their own insecurities. I have no idea if he’s gay, and I wouldn’t assume so, but it’s clear he’s insecure in his own masculinity. That’s what toxic masculinity is, not being masculine, but fear that others who are different from one’s self threaten one’s validity. It’s a visceral disbelief in the ability to tolerate people who live differently born of a deep-seated fear programmed into someone, usually at a young age, that usurps their self-confidence and drives them to signal their hatred of the differences they’re taught to fear.

Aw, man. I love his relaxed electronic boops.

Now I’m going to have to comb through my Pandora and delete all those pirated albums.

Obviously this person is a master of cleverness and nuance and we just don’t get it because we’re such dour snowflakes. /s

Using this as a springboard to a tangent…

For the last year, social media has been full of stuff like this:

https://twitter.com/disco_socialist/status/1003379773442158592?s=21

Significant portions of the LGBTQ community are, to put it mildly, unimpressed with this style of satire.

Does “gayness as punchline is a problematic thing” need explaining?

It sure looks like there’s an alt-right effort to rally around this youtube guy. He hasn’t put out a video in a week, but his subscriptions have skyrocketed. Looking at his stats on Socialblade, he was averaging 100-200 subscriptions a day for the previous 30 days, and then the subscribers took a dip when the original video came out. Yesterday, however, he gained 9,500 new subscribers, and today, he’s up another 5,500.

So, hooray for the forces of homophobia and edgelords everywhere, I guess.

One piss-poor aspect (of many) of this act of “protest” and others like it is that it doesn’t even have internal consistency. If the point is that the feminist-fascist-PC-police left will try to silence you no matter what you say, and “man, you can’t say anything any more” then why do have to say something actual hateful --that the “joke” maker themselves acknowledge is (would be…if they meatn it) hateful and innappropriate-- to get a response? That doesn’t prove a damn thing, except that decent people still don’t like bullies.

Pogo’s career trajectory is kind of bizarre; he started out as an early YouTube star (before that was a thing), got hired by Disney to do high-profile mashups for Up and a few other films, then used that fame to start doing really large-scale projects… and then sort of disappeared, putting out crappy, mediocre videos every once in awhile. The cynic in me says that he got bored with his incredibly specific style and saw quick money in playing the role of a psychotic bigot on YouTube.

If one’s old business model doesn’t seem to be working anymore, and one wants to run a con for some cash, racist, homophobic freeze-peachers do seem to be where that sweet sucker money is at these days.

I figured his music was making decent money since he has been releasing albums all the time, his most recent release was this year.

Sadly, as someone who works in the music industry myself, I don’t think independent music is making very decent money for anyone these days; streaming revenue is extremely little. Ad revenue on videos is where the real money is at at the moment.
