20 or more shooting victims reported in San Bernardino, CA. Police seeking active shooter

February is looking pretty damn good from this angle.

Fuck All Yall, I’m going to live in February if I ever return to the US.

They could be equaled, performance-wise, with landmines. Sitting there, waiting for their victim like silent sentries, patient, often for decades.

So weed is the problem?

Only a lack of it, maybe

You keep talking about these anti-knife laws and it’s bullshit. I have teenage friends who have a suitcase full of knives because they are trainee chefs. You could buy a knife or blade easily in the UK. But it would be impossible to buy a gun or rifle unless you are associating with dodgy characters. Do you buy NRA monthly or something?

In fact, I think we do have a mental health problem in this country. I would diagnose it as a psychotic (“loss of contact with reality”) obsession with guns.

Silly Bear… If this was a public health issue then the Center for Disease Control would be studying it.

As an aside, this has been a pretty active thread, with lots of posts, but so far the number of posts in this thread is only about 2/3rds the number of mass shootings in the US this year.

heh heh heh… and I am well aware that various groups have tried many times to study the issue, yet the problem of inconsistent data collection always remains. So people do their studies and then poof, they disappear into oblivion because we don’t have national data.

Check

Check, check (Versace, Tupac, Biggie…)

Check.

So uhm, what else?

It would be interesting to see the Grudge List.
You’ve got 355 massacres for the year, so a list of the root Grudge of each shooter.

I don’t think so. It needs to keep happening like that, week after week. Some asshole needs to be on the Oprah set and mow down most of the audience and Oprah. Some asshole needs to be inside the limo and mow down Paris Hilton and her entourage. It has to be on that level. That’s what’ll make the country wake up. Until then, it’s not a checklist like you say. It has to be regular, large and cause for immense hand-wringing of a scale we have not yet seen. The kids at Sandy Hook were a start, but only a start. It’s gotta be more massive.

…Not that I want it to be… I don’t want any of these innocent people to die… I’m not getting off on this. Just describing our bizarre psycho death parade.

This is what I always say. 20 children wasn’t enough for America to do something. What’s the magic number before it’s enough for people?

200 in one go would maybe do it. Maybe. 2000 people killed by crashing airplanes caused a war that’s still essentially going on 14 years later. McVeigh’s bombing did cause closer watching of the sale of nitrates and law/procedural changes, and nobody has managed a big truck bomb like it since.

Breivik managed to kill 77 people and injure 319 because he trapped them on an island and also fucked up his Phase I bombing. He wanted to get into the hundreds, but couldn’t. It’s very hard for a lone gunman to kill more than a hundred people. People tend to scatter.

If 2000 kids were killed on the same day, the likely reaction would be a deflection into terrorism or something like that, rather than it remaining a gun issue. The gunmen would have to work in concert, and therefore it would be attributed to terrorism rather than gun access.

So, trying to answer you honestly, a number in the hundreds, but sustained, as in hundreds week after week.

@gregmcph is right, though. We are acclimated. We’d probably just continue on, even if the numbers were routinely in the hundreds.

My original point is that we won’t precipitate an answer until we have reached saturation.

Where is saturation? Well, the medium keeps getting heated. But at some point, it cannot be heated any more and supersaturation will still cause a precipitate. I don’t know precisely where that supersaturation inflection point is. All I know is that we are nowhere near it yet.

When we pass it, the shift will be marked and obvious. We will all know it and breathe a sigh of relief. But when is anybody’s guess.

How is it bullshit? They have anti-knife campaigns. Yes you can still buy knives as they aren’t all illegal. IIRC they have restricted the type you can carry on your person, and even make non-stabby kitchen knives. Carry some chef knives in their case to your kitchen and you would be fine. Find a pocket knife or a kitchen knife on some yob and you will be in trouble.

The point is criminals moved to the next available weapon and the UK is “on top of it” with their propaganda.
