20 or more shooting victims reported in San Bernardino, CA. Police seeking active shooter

So, lets move American criminals to knives then? FFS

Thatā€™s gold. I particularly like Rep Tim Murphyā€™s wildly ineffective attempt at countering it.

Everything you wrote may be true. I still say that taking on the gun lobby is too resource intensive for any possible outcome. Thereā€™s lower hanging fruit out there. I suspect it would be easier to establish single-payer healthcare in the US than ban guns and the payoff would be bigger.

I donā€™t think thatā€™s changed since 1988.

Excellent. Itā€™s an arms race going backwards.

Guns are hard to buy, so less criminals have them. The police donā€™t generally carry guns, so thereā€™s less need for criminals to carry them anyway.

(but Iā€™ll grant you that the ban on locking pocket knives is stupid and just means that youā€™re meant to stick to more dangerous non-locking ones).

Well that would never work because of our laws.

But congrats, you just made it so it would mainly be restricted to wealthy white owners. Neighbor interviewed isnā€™t comfortable with the minority neighbor owning guns? The US is supposed to have a system rife with racism and sexism. So you basically give all the power to those keepers - gee - who are they going to favor and who are they going to discriminate against?

Who would carry out this expensive scheme? The Government? The cops? The same one the BB has repeated posts about spying on itā€™s citizens, bombing foreigners, manipulating copyright and trade laws, wanting back door access to our phones and computers, etc? That one? The one that has completely fucked up the war on drug? The one with the cops killing unarmed minorities in the streets? Yeah, no, this time, they got this. Totally.

I donā€™t think anyone is arguing that you literally canā€™t buy any knives in the UK, but to this German UK knife laws seem pretty draconian.

Of course as usual it is possible to ask why people would ever want to do what they donā€™t really have to do, but I am not sure how comfortable with that standard.

If only there was way of ā€¦ amending ā€¦ laws?

A disturbing possibility is that it isnā€™t terrorism. That three people somehow collectively thought it would be a good idea to gear up and unload on a bunch of people for no particular reason that benefited them in any material way. An early narrative coming out is that one of the shooters was an employee involved in a disputeā€¦ who somehow managed to convince two other people to join him in his work-related rampage. Thatā€™s kind of more disturbing than terrorism because it makes so little sense.

Yes, itā€™s like a religion, as if it were carved in stone.

The FBI guy on the press conference just now was very cagey on that. Wouldnā€™t say it was, but said there was some evidence pointing that way, sort of, but he wasnā€™t going to confirm or deny anything.

Gun owners have no wish to amend any laws or allow any new ones. Weā€™re going to have to do it for them.

Just pointing out the practicalities. You would have to change that first before any thing so drastic could done. Good luck with that.

But then again practical ideas have been in short supply on the anti side.

My point still stands. Actually we had some guns laws like that and there still are a few states and counties that have them. Like to get a handgun you have to have the Sheriff sign off on it. They were part of the Jim Crow laws. I have no doubt though that if we put them in place today we would see even, and fair issuing of permits.

Tell me, what is it like, to live in your world, where everything is utterly hopeless and everyone is out to get you, and nothing can ever be made better, and no lessons can ever be learned? How do you cope with the never ending fear, and the all-pervasive sense of hopelessness?

I hope you like pity, because thatā€™s about all youā€™re worth.

Harsh, very harsh.

People upvoting here have no idea how weak this thread is in ā€œSummarizeā€ mode.

Unless itā€™s non-white/non-Christian shooters, in which case we must politicize it to allow for white Christians to arm themselves (more) immediately. If the shooters are white/Christian, then absolutely, itā€™s too raw and we mustnā€™t go running off making policy in response, while weā€™re so emotional. In fact, given the rate at which these happen, letā€™s just agree to never, ever respond to this on a policy level, OK?
Thanks, The NRA
