20 or more shooting victims reported in San Bernardino, CA. Police seeking active shooter

It seems like it has to be ideological in part, on some level, just to get three people involved. It just doesn’t make sense, otherwise.

The whole knife thing is dealing with a specific problem. Guys getting drunk on a Saturday night, getting into a fight and then someone gets stabbed.

Obviously Chefs aren’t being hassled for concealing weapons. It’s not a Boolean Ban All Knives thing. And it’s dealing with a quite different issue to what’s going on here.

Me too. This whole fucking thing sucks.

NRA spent $30,650,008 in independent expenditures during the 2014 election cycle. You read that right. $30,650,008.

I wonder who was only worth $8?

I don’t live in fear. I’m not hopeless, but I also have realistic expectations. But I have a pessimistic view. Sure I do. It comes with experience. How old are you? I am sure Kennedy thought, “How hard can it be to take out some commie rice farmers in Viet-Nam?” And Nixon thought, “Well, if we just ban the drugs and put the dealers and smugglers in jail, no one will have drugs and we won’t have addicts and criminals doing crimes to score.” And Bush thought, “We just have to give these Arabs a taste of democracy and freedom, and they will adopt our value and improve their way of life.”

But alas, these fairy tales we tell ourselves never pan out. People are like, “OH the rest of the developed world with strict gun laws don’t have the problems the US has!” Well guess what, the less developed nations with those same strict gun laws have even worse problems than the US has. So maybe our killing and crime and violence stems from an issue other than the availability of a weapon. Maybe we are just less developed than those other nations.

If you could magically wish them away, then yes, I could see less gun crime in the US. ANYTHING other than that would do nothing but screw over the law abiding users. But some of you live in some fairly tale land where you “If only we just did this…” it would fix things when it has NEVER WORKED that way. The UK and Australia NEVER had the gun crime rate we had. So yes, when they went from rare to very rare because they made them less available. I showed you the UK murder rate. Are they any safer from Homicide?

So yeah, I don’t have my head in the clouds. Do you? Or is it just that goddamn awesome where you live?

No shit. I’ve heard reasonable practical ideas that would help from gun owners. Biometrics or smart fobs like for your car, yearly licences like for cars, only selling ammo for certain weapons at the range like in the military, follow Canada’s restrictions on handguns but allow long find fit hunting, but the response is always “any restrictions are to many!”

Then why can’t you own a hand grenade? Is that because they’re fucking dangerous? There are restrictions, they just don’t want any more. And the part they don’t see is that unless they get out and help find restrictions they can live with, to be a good guy about their guns, it’s going to go further than they would consider.

I’m sorry, I guess I missed the practical use of dildos in the deterrent of gun crime.

It’s just that goddamn awesome where I live. It’s not perfect, but I sure as shit will not swap with you - you can have my pity, but not my house.

Dildos are a better penis-substitute. Duh.

Or maybe it’s got something to do with the usual suspects that appear to fondle their weapons in these threads?

I guess we’ll never know.

Isn’t the US home of the “one-drop rule”?

I like the irony of it, because, by this definition, hardly any of the reactionaries qualify as white themselves.

With the rate these shootings are happening, we’ll never get to have the discussion, because there is no after, just the next! :sob:

Take that terrorits!!! You think you can terrorize us? We can do it better!!! A-M-E-R-I-C-A f yeah!!! Seriously, why are we so worked up about terrorists and immigrants? What could they possible do that we aren’t already doing better to ourselves. Fer f*cks sake…I don’t understand the conservative mindset.

I agree. American hasn’t seen a sharp increase in mental illness and doesn’t have a higher rate of mental illness then other countries, so the mental illness argument is just stupid and wrong. It also stigmatizes mental illness which is basically bigotry against people with an illness/handicap/disability. So it is both wrong and a horrible horrible thing to say. It has been disproved over and over that the statistics show that most mass shootings are NOT done by people with mental illness. People who claim this should be ASHAMED of themselves for being bigots against mental disability…shame on anyone who uses this argument.

#THE MENTAL ILLNESS ARGUMENT IS WRONG AND BIGOTRY.
The DSM defines what qualifies as mental illness, and murder is not and does not qualify you as mentally ill. if it did all murders would get off on insanity pleas. American hasn’t seen a sharp increase in mental illness and doesn’t have a higher rate of mental illness then other countries, yet we are the only country with this problem and have seen a sharp rise in mass shootings. This is not a mental illness issue, period. Stop stigmatizing the mentally ill to misdirect the conversation so you can keep guns under regulated, that is sick and wrong. That kind of bigotry is unacceptable.

Thanks for posting this!

Thank you both.

When I was referring to our laws it is the very real and important fact it is in the Constitution.

You also can’t ban people calling others horrible names because of the first amendment.

So if you want to suggest something, I wouldn’t bother suggesting something that would be ruled unconstitutional. You would be better off wishing for it to happen from a genie in a lamp.

If you want to call me a futility trolley because prohibition hasn’t’ worked for anything else, then I guess I’m your Huckleberry.

All but one of the times anybody has threatened me with a gun has been police. And I have always been unarmed. When are they going to approve my gun for fending them off?

I did. I suggested banning the sale of ammunition. I’m not interested in debating you because you have repeatedly demonstrated you don’t know what you’re talking about and instead of trying to have an honest discussion, you present the sort of arguments typically put forth by seventeen-year-old legal scholars with degrees from Wikipedia and no one is interested in your tiresome stream of fallacious, driving trollies bullshit you routinely post here after each mass shooting.

is anyone here even doubting that anymore?
