2022 Midterms

One exacerbating factor the party can anticipate is Democratic support for these extreme primary contenders who will have less general election appeal. The Democrats spent over $50 million to boost more polarizing Republican candidates in this year’s primaries, and in all four races where the Dem-boosted Republican won their primary, they lost the general. That success means this tactic is likely here to stay.

I say the Democrats got exceptionally lucky with this one, and such gambles still carry enormous risks. Still. the important thing is to do is to boost Warnock, and not to obsess about the next election cycle.

Last I heard, that’s what most are thinking. Warnock needs to get over 50% to win outright… I haven’t looked in the past few hours, but he was at 49.4% last time I saw…

With nearly all results in, neither Warnock nor Walker had earned the majority vote they needed to win the race outright.

Interim Deputy Secretary of State Gabriel Sterling said that while votes still need to be counted, “we feel it is safe to say there will be a runoff for the U.S. Senate here in Georgia slated for Dec. 6.”

It is always striking how different US election coverage is. Here in Germany literally the second the polls close the major networks present their best guess based on exit polls. That is then adjusted based on the actual results once those come in. Of course if the numbers are close it can take until later in the evening before all the important questions have been answered, but you get a pretty good idea where things are headed pretty soon. For example in the most recent federal election the initial projections were within one percentage point of the final result for all parties. An hour after polls had closed they were within 0.3 percent.

I get that mostly proportional representation makes it easier, but I just don’t understand covering the counting process as if it was a race.

I mean it seems like there’s an infinitesimal chance that he could get over the line but it’s probably not gonna happen. I’d image if he did with those current margins it’d be tied up in lawsuits and recount demands. I feel good about his chances in a run-off though.

More than anything I just find it astonishing that people would look at Warnock - a fucking pastor, seemingly good dude, who wants to help people and do the all things Christianity says you should do, and then decide “nah, I’d rather vote for the former football guy and noted scumbag that doesn’t really have any coherent vision or plan”.

Wait, are you saying that the German exit polling process is a model of efficiency?!

Just a few points I have noticed living in Germany:

  • German elections are on a Sunday, not a Tuesday
  • German polls have uniform rules across all states, and automatic voter registration. Voting in Hamburg in a federal election is about the same in Bavaria.
  • That also includes poll watchers. Each party can nominate one single representative per polling place to verify the count as it happens.
  • To the best of my knowledge Germany still uses only paper ballots, and mail-in voting only really took off after the pandemic hit.
  • I also follow the election results even if I can’t vote yet, and what I think plays a role is Germans don’t troll pollsters as much as Americans do.
  • The US constitution is interesting in that it actually never mentions parties. All elections are supposed to be between candidates and not parties. George Washington wanted to abolish all parties. In fact, in the early days, the Vice President was supposed to be the runner-up in the electoral college, but after Johnson followed Lincoln people finally admitted it was a stupid idea.

I voted by mail, and since Iowa was my last residence before emigrating to Europe I have to vote there. So my vote for the Democrat feels wasted, alas.

The Fox News decision desk has historically aimed for accuracy rather than the reinforcement of partisan narratives. The guy who leads it is not a Republican and acquired some minor news coverage for being personally insulted by Trump last time around: Arnon Mishkin - Wikipedia

This is by design because something something States’ rights. Which of course means everything is a clusterfuck during national elections and as we now know, states can theoretically wield power to overturn national elections if they have a legislature that’s corrupt enough to do it. The past several years of legislation attempts to improve this federally have been stalled and obstructed by Republicans in the Senate because they know they can only win by cheating or by using dirty tactics rather than good governance.

Yeah. Fox News may be a right wing propaganda arm of the Republican Party, but their decision desk is actually quite good and non-partisan.

they were instrumental in helping shrub win florida. they called the race before it was known, giving him the veneer of winning which the supreme court then cited in deciding for him.

maybe the people there are completely different now, but i personally wouldn’t trust them
