I thought about this last night. A lot of people, when they feel they’ve made a bad decision, double down on it because they would rather be foolish than look foolish. I think at this point Pelosi basically will not be able to bring herself to impeach without staggering evidence of new crimes.

Her statement yesterday makes it clear (to me) the evidence will be used not for impeachment but, for betting the house on a Senate turnover.
“I don’t care, I mean I’d like the Senate to be responsible and honor their oath of office to protect and to defend the Constitution, to see the challenge this is to our national security of the Russians trying to do to our country,” Pelosi added.
“But the stronger our case is, the worse the Senate will look for just letting the president off the hook,” she concluded.

But the senate hasn’t let the president off the hook. Not until they actually conduct the impeachment hearings and send it to the senate. At that point the senate would let the president off the hook.
