Not directly, no but they gave AQ a home base and protection. They had different goals but the Venn diagram overlapped quite a bit.
Not saying this take is 100% accurate but JFC the optics here. I know Trump basically doesn’t give two shits about optics but given how seriously people take 9/11 (for better or worse) this seems incredibly tone deaf. Even for him.

Uh-oh, another wave of brown people has caught Trump’s eye. Better put the kibosh on their thinking the USA might help them out in a time of extreme need.

I always felt this was a terrible idea ever since the news of a potential peace treaty were swirling a few weeks back. And in predictable fashion, Trump’s own hubris played a huge part in tanking the whole thing anyway.
Mr. Trump did not want the Camp David meeting to be a celebration of the deal; after staying out of the details of what has been a delicate effort in a complicated region, Mr. Trump wanted to be the dealmaker who would put the final parts together himself, or at least be perceived to be.
