Yeah thatās gonna end wellā¦
If anyone needs me, Iāll be in my bunker.
Yeah thatās gonna end wellā¦
If anyone needs me, Iāll be in my bunker.
Got any space? Iāll bring some candles and a scrabble board.
Ooh - and my hurricane stockpile of actually decent instant coffee! Thatāll seal the deal.
Plans take forethought. This whole situation is more of a fly by the seat of your pants affair.
I donāt expect any thought from Donnie - but surely the military had a long term ājust in caseā plan they can dust off?
Wonāt that be awkward if Tmurp is no longer president.
Yeah, thatās not terrifying or anything. Good thing Trump has such a large brain and unmatched wisdom! We could be in real trouble otherwise!
That would be the best serving of schadenfreude, ever.
Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told reporters today that aid to Ukraine was in fact tied to President Trumpās wish for an investigation into the 2016 election.
When asked about the decision to withhold aid from Ukraine, Mulvaney told reporters that President Trump told him at the time, "This is a corrupt place. Everyone knows this is a corrupt placeā¦Plus, Iām not sure that the other European countries are helping them out either.ā
When questioned on Mulvaney saying that the White House held up security money from Ukraine until the president got assurances, Mulvaney told reporters to āget over itā saying there are going to be political impacts on foreign policy.
So uhā¦ about that quid-pro-quoā¦!
āYeah, we did it; so what?ā is a helluva a defense tactic.
O_o
Unless the repubs grow a spine, it may just work.
I understand the cynicism, but not all of them can be that fucking shortsighted; to me, the people defying the WH line about not cooperating with the investigation and testifying anyway shows that at least some of them realize this shit canāt last indefinitely, and that there will be negative consequences.
Like, a sitting president canāt be indicted*. But Mick Mulvaney is not a sitting president. People need to start thinking about their own situation, and I think a lot of them are.
* According to a bullshit legal opinion.
And neither is everyone else who has enabled the orange fucker thus far. They are quite indictable.
Itās a bizarre gambit, a hail-mary panic. Itās as if someone read the words āthe coverup is worse than the crimeā and decided to try just admitting everything openly, including that Trump is corrupt, and see what happens.
With McConnell holding a free pass out for these crooks anythingās a go.
Not necessarily 100% bullshit. This actually is a holdover from the British class system and ājury of your peersā. Just as a high-enough-ranking noble used to have to be indicted by the House of Commons and tried in the House of Lords, the President may need to be indicted by the House of Representatives and tried in the Senate.
One thing thatās fairly interesting about the current understanding of the trial procedure is that the Senate is sitting as a jury, with the Chief Justice as judge. (The Representative who present the articles of impeachment are the prosecutors; the President has the right to retain private defense counsel.) Jurors ordinarily do not speak during the trial, only during the deliberations that follow. Roberts knows how to maintain order in a courtroom.(Of course, the Senate has plenary authority over its own rules, so expect the rules to change.)
If the Articles survive the (expected) initial motion to dismiss, the deliberations will get ā¦ interesting. I donāt think enough Republicans will toe the line to allow for all charges to be dismissed before at least hearing testimony. They would be loath to declare that the President is entirely above the law, for no better reason that that they will jealously guard their own power as Senators.
Hereās a bizarre scenario to ponder. The Senate votes 67-33 to convict. Pence attempts to cast a tie-breaking vote, claiming that since 67-34 is less than two thirds, his vote acquits.
(Itās at least less fearsome than the scenario where Trump refuses to accept any decision removing him from office, declares a government-in-exile at Mar-a-Lago, and starts giving orders to law enforcement and the military. If he starts promising the goons that they can murder to their heartsā content as long as theyāre loyal to him personally, how many will follow?)
I thought Pence wanted to be president. We saw how the Rās regrouped around Trump; theyād do it again around Pence. And Mrs. Pence detests Trump.
